Corona - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
The wave heating theory, proposed in 1949 by Evry Schatzman, uses waves to carry energy from the solar interior to the solar chromosphere and corona.
Magneto-acoustic waves are sound waves that have been modified by the presence of a magnetic field, and Alfvén waves, are similar to ULF radio waves that have been modified by interaction with matter in the plasma.
Both types of waves can be launched by the turbulence of granulation and supergranulation at the solar photosphere, and both types of waves can carry energy for some distance through the solar atmosphere before turning into shock waves that dissipate their energy as heat.

The WAVES began in August 1942, when Mildred McAfee was sworn in as a Naval Reserve Lieutenant Commander, the first female commissioned officer in U.S. Navy history, and the first director of the WAVES.
Transverse Waves are waves that vibrate perpendicular to the direction of travel of the wave.
Longitudinal Waves are waves that vibrate parallel to the direction of travel of the wave.

 TFCBooks -- Tesla Site Glossary
A longitudinal compression wave in the ion density of a plasma.
plasma, weakly ionized A plasma in which only a small fraction of the atoms are ionized, as opposed to a highly ionized plasma, in which nearly all atoms are ionized, or a fully ionized plasma, in which all atoms are stripped of all electrons nearly all the time.
Plasma physics encompasses the study of plasmas for industrial use (materials processing and lighting) through much of astrophysics (where most matter is in the plasma state) to fusion energy research.

Using the gravitational instability of the Earth/Moon and Earth/Sun Lagrange points, the spacecraft made a series of lunar orbits, making its closest pass on December 22, 1983.
On June 5, 1985, ICE passed through the plasma tail of the Giacobini-Zinner comet.
It instead carried instruments for measurements of energetic particles, waves, plasmas, and fields.

What makes this book unique in the treatment of this subject is its focus on the properties that make the soliton physically ubiquitous and the soliton equation mathematically miraculous.
Here, on the classical level, is the entity field theorists have been postulating for years: a local traveling wave pulse; a lump-like coherent structure; the solution of a field equation with remarkable stability and particle-like properties.
It is a fundamental mode of propagation in gravity- driven surface and internal waves; in atmospheric waves; in ion acoustic and Langmuir waves in plasmas; in some laser waves in nonlinear media; and in many biologic contexts, such as alpha- helix proteins.
