  Manas: History and Politics, Plassey
On June 23rd of that year, at the Battle of Plassey, a small village and mango grove between Calcutta and Murshidabad, the forces of the East India Company under Robert Clive defeated the army of Siraj-ud-daulah, the Nawab of Bengal.
The "battle" lasted no more than a few hours, and indeed the outcome of the battle had been decided long before the soldiers came to the battlefield.
In one fundamental respect, the battle of Plassey signified the state of things to come: few British victories were achieved without the use of bribes, and few promises made by the British were ever kept.

  Battle of Plassey
On June 23rd, 1757 at Plassey, a small village and mango grove between Calcutta and Murshidabad, the forces of the East India Company under Robert Clive met the army of Siraj-ud-Doula, the Nawab of Bengal.
During the battle a monsoon storm, lasting nearly an hour, drenched both sides and the ground, The Indian guns slackened their fire because their powder was insufficiently protected, but when the Indian cavalry charged in the hope that the British guns had suffered similarly they were sharply repulsed by heavy fire.
Plassey was decisive for the British in India, and for Clive.

Robert Clive - Shropshire's Empire Builder Part 3
As he prepared for the battle of Plassey Clive was already a national hero.
Plassey, like all of Clive's battles, bore little resemblance to the set pieces of the European conflicts.
While this makes Plassey seem more of a skirmish than a major battle it once again showed Clive's skill as a general and his reputation as unbeatable was reinforced throughout India.

Plassey House is a 19th century mansion in the Palazzo style which has close associations with two noted Anglo-Irish families - the Maunsells, friends of Cardinal Newman, and the Russells, who in the 1860's were considered the largest millers in Western Europe.
This background of elegant heritage accommodated the first 100 students in 1972 when the campus was initiated and now houses some of its art collections and the University Club - a meeting place for senior faculty and leaders from enterprise.
Splendidly located on the grassy banks of the noble Shannon River, some of the most noted features of Plassey House include its rich stucco work, ornate ceilings and a fountain reputedly uncovered in the excavations of Pompeii in 1763.

The Baldwin Project: The Story of Lord Clive by John Lang
But though comparatively so few of the English were killed, this battle of Plassey, fought in June 1757, was one of the most important that ever took place in India.
Plassey gave to England a secure footing in Bengal, with a secure base resting on the sea (so long as she possesses a strong navy), and from that starting-point she has gradually absorbed all India.
Then you will remember that it was Clive who won this victory of Plassey, the effects of which are felt even to this day, and which perhaps may one day affect even some of yourselves.

Clive had advanced to Cossimbuzar; the Nabob lay with a mighty power a few miles off at Plassey; and still Meer Jaffier delayed to fulfil his engagements, and returned evasive answers to the earnest remonstrances of the English general.
The river was passed; and, at the close of a toilsome day's march, the army, long after sunset, took up its quarters in a grove of mango-trees near Plassey, within a mile of the enemy.
Clive was unable to sleep; he heard, through the whole night the sound of drums and cymbals from the vast camp of the Nabob.

Plassey was a portentious indicator of a new dynamic in Indo-British relations.
While Plassey may have been a matter of "survival" for the East India Company, the subsequent battles were not in that category.
In essence, the race for the colonization of India had been won by the British, and what Abbe de Pradt was saying was that it was in French interest to enjoy the "general" benefits of this victory and not bemoan the loss of "specific" benefits from the British victory.
