Controlling the ultrasonic plastic welding process
Ultrasonic equipment for plastic welding invariably works at constant amplitude, with generator power being adjusted automatically as required to maintain the chosen vibration amplitude (known as "Power by Demand").
This is most likely in far-field welding where the component have a limited capacity to transmit vibrations to the joint.
Weld time is critical, and will generally be the last setting adjusted (and the first to be re-adjusted when something goes wrong!).

Plastic welding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is the extruded rod that is used to weld plastic.
This is the same as spot welding except that heat is supplied with convection of the pincher tips, instead of electrical conduction.
In vibration or friction welding, the two parts to be assembled are frictionned together at a lower frequency and higher amplitude than ultrasonic welding.

The weld horn and booster are designed to have an axial mode of vibration at the frequency that the generator signal oscillates the converter.
Plastic melt occurs when the material at the part-to-part interface melts and the parts bond with the necessary strength and seal requirements of the assembly.
The booster and weld horn components are merely reactive segments of the compression waveform in the stack.

Ultrasonic welding   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
When welding thermoplastics, the thermal rise in the bonding area is produced by the absorption of mechanical vibrations, the reflection of the vibrations in the connecting area, and the friction of the surfaces of the parts.
Whereas in plastic welding, high-frequency vertical vibrations (20 to 70kHz) are used to increase the temperature and plastify the material, the joining of metals is an entirely different process.
In contrast to plastics welding, the mechanical vibrations used during ultrasonic metal welding are introduced horizontally.

 Ultrasonic plastic-welding
Plastic welding is used for a huge variety of products ranging from blister packs, cartons and small consumer goods up to car fuel tanks and dashboards.
Best results are achieved when the components are clamped close to the interface ("near-field" welding) but if this is not possible then the process can still work at a distance ("far-field").
Staking, or insertion, is a variation of this process in which a metal part (generally a threaded bush) is driven into a hole in a plastic component, which then solidifies around it to form a permanent join.

 Plastic Welding and Fabrication
Plastic welding is, in a lot of industries, mostly unrecognized, but fabricators often need to join plastic parts together in one way or another.
Fabricators new to plastic welding often ask "Where do I start?" "What do I need to know to make a proper plastic weld?" Well, quite a few things have to be considered before a proper start can be made.
Welding of plastics is done by bringing them up to the specific weld temperature (viscous flow), joining them under pressure, and allowing them to cool down slowly!

Vibration plastic welding machine from Dukane Ultrasonics
Vibration plastic welding machine systems are available as a single unit or a standalone assembly system, or it may be integrated into automated machinery.
The mechanical motion of vibration plastic welding, along with applied force, creates frictional heat at the plastic components' mating surfaces (joint area) so the plastic material will melt and form a molecular bond between the parts.
Linear plastic welding physically moves one of two parts horizontally under pressure, creating heat through surface friction that melts and welds the parts together.

Welding of thermoplastic materials and welding of low-melting-point plastics is easily achieved with lasers.
The ideal configuration for laser welding of plastics is an overlap between a layer that is transparent to the laser and a layer that absorbs the laser.
The laser beam penetrates the upper layer and is absorbed by the lower layer at the point where the layers meet, warming the lower layer to a melting temperature but not to a disintegration temperature.
