Plate armour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Plate armour protecting the chest and the lower limbs was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans, but it fell into disuse after the collapse of the Roman Empire.
Full plate armour was very expensive to produce and remained therefore restricted to the upper strata of society, and lavishly decorated suits of armour remained the fashion with 17th century nobles and generals, long after they had ceased to be militarily useful due to the introduction of firearms in the battlefield.
Plate armour could have consisted of a helmet, a gorget, pauldrons (or spaulders), couters, vambraces, gauntlets, a cuirass (back and breastplate) with a fauld, tassets and a culet, a chainmail skirt, cuisses, poleyns, greaves, and sabatons.

plate mail   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Plate had become the standard form of armor by the late 15th century, replacing chain mail.
Plate was just that, a sheet of metal (about as thick as that used to make cars in the 1950s) and formed into a breat plate (front and back) a flexible metal "skirt" as well as articulated coverings for the arms and legs.
Plate armor was made to order, thus it was very expensive, costing from 10,000 to 50,000 ducats depending on how complete and fancy the suit was.

Banded mail in contemporary illustrations, especially from the 12th and 13th centuries, may represent alternating rows of riveted rings and rings made by punching complete closed circles of metal from a thin sheet of iron, adding strength, since there is no weak point on unriveted rings.
Plates from this type of garment were excavated at the Castle of Montfort in the Holy Land, and must date to before 1271, when the castle fell to the Saracens (Edge and Paddock 57).
Mail chausses continue to be shown commonly until 1350 and occasionally, in Spain and Germany, to the end of the century.

The softest of the true plate mail armours, bronze plate mail is made of heavy metal plates attached to a layer of composite layers of metal scales and leather or padded armour.

A Small History of Mail (Chainmail)
Mail is flexible and composed of many individual bits, whether it be the lorica segmentata or the lorica hamata of the Romans; the term 'plate mail' is absurd, and 'chainmail' almost as bad..
Mail's primary disadvantages are: it is heavy for its protectiveness, all the weight is concentrated on a very few points of the wearer, it has a VERY high surface area and rusts quickly, and it is not as protective against crushing blows as plate armor.
Riveted mail had the ends of rings overlap; they were hammered flat, a hole was punched through, and a triangular rivet was forced through the hole and hammered down on the point end.

Dwarven chain mail differs from human chain mail in three key ways: the suits are smaller (save when cloud dwarves forge them), the links are thicker and forged of mithril, adamantium and other rare metals, and the suits are far heavier and only suited to regular use by dwarves.

The use of the word “mail” in this instance was not meant to be specifically referring to “true” (4-in-1) mail, but as a general term to describe armour — in this case, bronze scale armour.
Because of this overly-generic use of the term “mail,” a word was needed to differentiate true mail from other types of body armour — hence the term “chain mail.” If the word “mail” is used in its correct context then “chain mail” is superfluous and does not need to be used at all.
One of the types of armour interpreted from contemporary illustrations was given the term "ring mail." Meyrick's definition of ring mail consisted of a foundation garment upon which non-interlocking metal rings were attached.

Plate, on the other hand, is not only impervious to cuts and penetration (except possibly by heavy blows from spiked warhammers or similar nasties), but causes blows to skip off the surface of the steel.
Mail is easier to store and easier to polish in case of rust (just put it in a bucket and shake the bucket for half an hour and you're done).
Plate is more restrictive, and impossible to put on by yourself, but the initial question was about a knight clad in mail versus a knight clad in plate.

Lamellar mail is an AT19 but with less penalties to missile and Qu, but then we should put a balance factor, if it defend as AT19 but have no penalty, then is unbalanced compared with original AT19, it would be better armor and all fighters would have one.
A note tough: I preferred to keep scale mail as a chain mail type (at 13/16), for balance's sake, and because it would never weigh as a plate mail (and it's a flexible armor), so it would be overpowered to have an AT 14 protecting as an AT 18.
