However, it is a historic fact that when Yoka Daishi3 arrived for his famous encounter with the Sixth Patriarch, the Patriarch was, at that moment, sitting in zazen - in fact, at that moment he was in a sesshin with all of his disciples.
It is also a fact that when the Patriarch died on Mount Sokei in 718, his last breath was experienced while in the perfect posture of zazen, his legs crossed in the lotus position.
This Platform Sutra is of very minor importance in the schools of Soto, Rinzai and Obaku.

Platform Sutra of Sixh Patriarch Hui Neng
The Patriarch told his disciples that the question of incessant rebirth was a momentous one, that those who wished to inherit his robe and Dharma should write him a stanza, and that the one who had an understanding of the Essence of Mind would get them and be made the sixth Patriarch.
As a youth, he studied sutras and shastras and was well-versed in the teaching of samatha (inhibition or quietude) and vipasyana (contemplation or discernment) of the T'ien T'ai School.
As they called their own teacher, Shen Hsiu, the Sixth Patriarch on no better authority than their own, the followers of the Northern School were jealous of the rightful owner of that title whose claim, supported by the inherited robe, was too well known to be ignored.

A.D. He taught the practice of “wall-gazing” and espoused the teachings of the Lanka-Vatara Sutra (whose chief doctrine is that of “consciousness-only”; see Yogacara), which he passed on to his successor Hui-k’o (487–593).
According to tradition, Hui-neng (638–713) became the sixth patriarch of Chinese Zen by superseding his rival in the intuitive grasp of the truth of enlightenment, even though he was illiterate.
The Platform Sutra, attributed to Hui-neng, defines enlightenment as the direct seeing of one’s “original Mind” or “original Nature,” which is Buddha, and this teaching has remained characteristic of Zen.

Why did the patriarch Hung Jen publicly praise the stanza by saying "It will be better to leave the stanza here, so that people may study it and recite it." You will also find this line "If they put its teaching into practice, they will be saved from the misery".
The Sutra tells us that Hui-neng was read the Diamond Sutra and then proclaimed "I at once became throughly enlightened" (note sudden enlightenment) after which he received the robe and bowl.
Although the historical accounts in the Platform Sutra are completely false, the teachings within it are part of main Buddhist tradition and are very much along the lines of those taught by Hung-jen and are very similar to the teachings of Shen-hui.

Interestingly, the Platform Sutra is reverential and exegetical regarding the Lotus Sutra, devoting a full chapter (42) to commenting upon and praising the Lotus Sutra in the form of a discourse between a visiting priest (Fa Ta) and the 6th Patriarch himself.
Hearing it, the Sixth Patriarch understood the Buddha's meaning, and then discoursed on the Lotus Sutra for the sake of Fa-ta.
