The platinum group (alternatively, the platinum group metals or platinum metals) is a collective name sometimes used for six metallic elements clustered together in the periodic table.
Platinum, platinum alloys, and iridium are used as crucible materials for the growth of single crystals, especially oxides.
Platinum in a native state, often accompanied by small amounts of other platinum metals, is found in alluvial and placer deposits in Colombia, Ontario, the Ural Mountains, and in certain western American states.

Platinum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Platinum was discussed by astronomer Antonio de Ulloa and Don Jorge Juan y Santacilia (1713–1773), both appointed by King Philip V to join a geographical expedition in Peru that lasted from 1735 to 1745.
Platinum is often found chemically uncombined as native platinum and alloyed with iridium as platiniridium.
As platinum is a catalyst in the manufacture of the silicone rubber and gel components of several types of medical implants (breast implants, joint replacement prosthetics, artificial lumbar discs, vascular access ports), the possibility that platinum free radicals could enter the body and cause adverse effects has merited study.

 NATIVE PLATINUM (Pt)
Platinum's origin in the crust is from ultra-mafic igneous rocks and therefore platinum is associated with minerals common to these rocks such as chromite and olivine.
Over the ages, the platinum became weathered out of the igneous rocks and were tumbled down streams and rivers where the extremely heavy grains and nuggets of platinum collect behind rocks and bends in the rivers and streams.
Native platinum is the primary ore of platinum, but deposits containing the rare platinum arsenide, sperrylite of the Pyrite Group, have made a huge contribution to the world's limited supply.

The huge quantities of nickel ore processed makes up for the fact that platinum makes up only two parts per million of the ore. South Africa, with vast platinum ore deposits in the Merensky Reef of the Bushveld complex, is the world's largest producer of platinum, followed by Russia.
Even though the quantity of platinum metals found in these ores is small, the large volume of nickel ores processed makes commercial recovery possible.

A third group of 7 coal samples was chosen because of the relatively high concentration of elements (such as Cr, Co, Ni, V, Ag, Pb, total sulfur, pyritic sulfur) that may be associated with PGE due to thier geochemical properties (Goldschmidt, 1954).
A fifth group of 37 samples was picked on the basis of their carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen ratios representing mostly cannel coal samples (initial results indicated higher concentrations of PGEs in cannel coals than in banded coals).
