Platonic love - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Platonic love in its modern popular sense is an affectionate relationship into which the sexual element does not enter, especially in cases where one might easily assume otherwise.
At the same time, this interpretation is a misunderstanding of the nature of the Platonic ideal of love, which from its origin was that of a chaste but passionate love, based not on uninterest but virtuous restraint.
The understanding that Platonic love could be interpreted as masculine eros, albeit unconsummated, is intimately linked with the construction of a homosexual identity, and the cultural model of platonic friendship / pederasty was used by educated gay men since the early Renaissance.

 John Addington Symonds:
Platonic love, in the true sense of that phrase, was the affection of a man for a man; and it grew out of antecedent customs which had obtained from very distant times in Hellas.
Love, like poetry and prophecy, is a divine gift, which diverts men from the common current of their earthly lives; and in the right use of this gift lies the secret of all human excellence.
Accordingly the Platonic conception of Greek love soon revealed its unsubstantiality, whereas the Dantesque conception of feudal love allied itself to the symbolising tendencies of the age in art and letters, and to the hazy webweavings of contemporary science.

 20th WCP: Loving Persons
Whereas the acquisitive objection holds that Plato’s account of love is determined by possession of the object of love and thus incompatible with loving another for his/her own sake, the egocentric objection pushes this criticism somewhat further by claiming that the motivation and activities of all Platonic love is focused on the self.
Love, however, includes desire both in terms of setting on an object to be loved and in terms of desiring to "give" or "procreate" in the presence of the Good/Beautiful.

Chicken or the Egg: Platonic Love - Revisited
When I wrote my views about that subject, I was undecided whether platonic love truly exists, or if it can only be present in the absence of physical attraction, and if it is considered as a last resort when circumstances prevent either party from pursuing a relationship.
Platonic love is defined as "an affectionate relationship into which the sexual element does not enter, especially in cases where one might easily assume otherwise." Otherwise stated, platonic love is devoid of any physical attraction or sexual interest.
Nevertheless, many use the term platonic love when there is a marked degree of hidden sexual attraction, and either party cannot pursue it, for one good reason or another.

Love of the Aegean Sea portrays one of the most bittersweet types of love — the unrequited, one-sided love often known as “Platonic Love.” I had always thought that when a relationship’s “platonic,” it just means it is based on a sincere friendship.
According to this series, however, “platonic love” is probably the highest and most tragic form of love, because it involves caring and loving a person from a distance, never expecting anything in return and never revealing one’s true feelings.
Aside from all the Greek-themed plot points (the platonic love triangles, the “Plato’s Eternity” bracelet, the “evil eye” keychain, and the absolutely gorgeous scenic shots), QDAQH is essentially about the struggles one star-crossed couple suffers in order to be together.

Marsilio Ficino, a Renaissance follower of Plato, used the terms amor socraticus and amor platonicus interchangeably for a love between two humans that was preparatory for the love of God.
From Ficino's usage, Platonic (already present in English as an adjective to describe what related to Plato and first recorded in 1533) came to be used for a spiritual love between persons of opposite sexes.

In the last three weeks, each class member will select an ancient text or artifact which presents a viewpoint on erotic love and will study it either for its value as evidence of social interactions or for its encoded message as social comment.
Results of this study will be presented both orally and in a written essay between 20 and 30 pages in length.
