Platoon (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Platoon is a 1986 Vietnam war film, written and directed by Oliver Stone and starring Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger and Forest Whitaker.
Platoon, while not the first film about the USA's involvement in the Vietnam Conflict, was probably the first to devote its entire storyline to the effect of the war on the common soldier.
Platoon's release was timely; during the mid-80s there was a softening of attitudes towards Vietnam Veterans that had taken over ten years since the war had officially ended in 1973 with the pullout of the last American soldiers.

 ‘Platoon’ (R)
"Platoon" is a triumph for Oliver Stone, a film in which a visceral approach to violence, which has always set him apart, is balanced by classical symmetries and a kind of elegiac distance.
And in that way, "Platoon" is the first serious youth movie in ages, for at its heart, the war is treated as a rite of passage in its most intense form.
A platoon is, after all, a fairly large group, and the highest achievement, perhaps, of Stone's writing is the vividness with which he has drawn the supporting players, and the clarity with which he's orchestrated our sympathies toward them.

Platoon depicts several battles, including a massive one that takes place at night in which a frightening number of casualties are absorbed by the Americans, but the key scenes occur when Chris' platoon enters a Vietnamese village.

This title (as well as Take 2's upcoming Vietcong) should help prove that there are ways to re-create the war that nearly tore America apart, and could signal the start of a whole wave of titles set in the jungles of Vietnam.
While Platoon is officially licensed and has a similar theme to the 1986 film, it doesn't really follow the storyline too closely.
Platoon covers the time period from late 1965 (as U.S. soldiers began to arrive in Vietnam in mass numbers) through the height of the fighting in 1968.

The DVD Journal: Platoon: Special Edition
Platoon was released in 1986, back when American filmgoers were naming their dogs and offspring after the brawny hero of Rambo: First Blood Part II, intoxicated by that film's dizzying bubblegum action, while concurrently beset by endless Chuck Norris Missing in Action sequels on cable television.
Platoon was important, and it struck a nerve, rivatilzing the Hollywood war film and opening up a new, straightforward cinematic dialogue about Vietnam.
Platoon is more valuable considered when observed within this cultural context, rather than as the sometimes dull, sometimes overindulgent, occasionally powerful film that it is. Sheen stars and narrates as Chris Taylor, a privileged white kid (and Stone alter ego) who enlisted because he felt that the draft was unfairly targeting poor minorities.

Platoon basically is a strategy, but some of its features as well as the lack of some other features that would typically be expected in a strategy game will severely influence gameplay.
Realistic damage model is not really one of the trumps of this game; for instance, if your platoon stumbles upon a mine, several of your soldiers will probably fall to the ground, and then, seconds later, get up as if nothing had happened.
Platoon is not for the faint of heart, but for all the wrong reasons.

Indeed, valiant efforts were made on both sides of the war, and it would take a skillful title to weight such acts for everyone involved, luckily, since Platoon is based on the movie it takes its name from, the scope of the game is limited to that of the United States.
However, not only does it fails to be accurate with the movie, but it also presents a faceless enemy and ends up being a title that isn't much fun to play.
Platoon showed a good deal of promise, and playing with all the units and vehicles does provide some fun, but overall, it fails to ultimately deliver on its potential.

Winner of four Oscars, "Platoon" marked an important change in the approach to movies about Vietnam and the US public's reaction to films about the conflict.

The impact of this was obviously lost on VHS, but a fresh new 5.1 mix for DVD adds sub-woofer thunder to the helicopters and explosions, and eerie jungle noise to the rear surrounds.
