In an army a platoon is a unit of to forty soldiers typically commanded by a First Lieutenant who is assisted with either a Second Lieutenant or Sergeant Major as platoon lieutenants; a platoon may be commanded by a Second Lieutenant with Sergeant Major as his platoon lieutenant.

The platoon was the smallest subunit in a battalion to be led by an officer.
The platoon headquarters contained the support weapons of the platoon; the two-inch mortar was used either to fire high explosive rounds, provide illumination at night, or to provide smoke cover to the platoon.
The Platoon Commander was officially armed only with a pistol (.38 calibre revolver until November 1944 when they were replaced with Browning 9mm automatics) but in action usually carried a Sten or even a rifle so as not to be singled out by enemy snipers.

Platoon Sergeant, as noted in the article was a uniquely Marine rank--some of the first chevrons sported a star (5-pointed)between the chevrons and rocker.
It had been recommended that the rank titles of chief sergeant, sergeant 1st, 2d, and 3d class be adopted, and this nearly came to be.
And, of course the Master Gunnery Sergeant was a variation of both the unique Marine gunnery sergeant rank which dates to 1898, and the (Army) master sergeant rank.
