Within the monotypic order, the single family Psittaciformes can be divided into several sharply delimited groups (subfamilies) which are the Cacatuinae, the Loriinae, the Psittacinae, the Psittrichadinae, and the Loriculinae.
The Psittacinae can be divided into several tribes, namely the Platycercini, the Psittaculini, and the Psittacini.
Prosopeia is placed with the Platycercini, in contrast to Alisterus, Aprosmictus and Polytelis which belong to the Psittaculini.

These are 37 species in genera, and many are found in Australia's eucalyptus forest or the dry interior (including flocks of Budgerigar Melopsittacus undulatus from which the many varieties of pet "Budgies" have been bred).
