Platysternon megacephalum is the sole living representative of a poorly-studied turtle lineage (Platysternidae), and its phylogenetic position within turtles is not easily established.
The oldest fossil referred to the stem lineage of Platysternon (the Platysternidae), are from the Paleogene of Asia (55–60 mya) [12,13], at about the same time we find the oldest testudinoids [14,15].

Turtles of the World > Species: Family Platysternidae (Big-headed turtles)
The southeastern Asiatic family Platysternidae is represented by a single living species, Platysternon megacephalum, the big-headed turtle.
Most authorities recognize Platysternidae as a separate family, but Romer (1956) regarded it as only a subfamily (Platysterninae) of the large family Testudinidae, in which he also included tortoises and batagurids.
Some of these that received strong bootstrap support indicated the families Chelydridae and Platysternidae form a monophyletic unit, and based on that, Shaffer et al.

Inframarginals, a series of small scutes lying between the carapacial marginals and the sides of the adjacent plastral scutes, are present in the families Cheloniidae, Chelydridae, Dermatemydidae, and Platysternidae.
Turtles of the genera Pelusios, Emys, Emydoidea, Terrapene, Cuora, Cyclemys, Pyxidea, Notochelys, Pyxis, and Testudo have a transverse hinge, more or less developed on the plastron, and in most species of Kinosternon a pair of hinges borders the abdominals.

The uniqueness of the Big-Headed Turtle has resulted in its being a monotypic turtle, meaning that it has its own family.
It was once thought, to be closely related to the Snapping Turtle, but further research has resulted in it being placed in its own group, the Platysternidae.
While capable of hunting in both land and water, the Big-Headed Turtle prefers living in mountain streams where the water flows fast and there are plenty of rocks and boulders.

IngentaConnect Geometric morphometrics of the shoulder girdle in extant turtles ...
The results indicate that four shape patterns can be distinguished.
The shoulder girdles of (1) terrestrial (Testudinidae), (2) highly aquatic freshwater (Trionychidae, Carettochelyidae) and (3) marine turtles (Cheloniidae, Dermochelyidae) correspond to three specialized morphological patterns, whereas the shoulder girdle of (4) semi-aquatic freshwater turtles (Bataguridae, Chelidae, Chelydridae, Emydidae, Kinosternidae, Pelomedusidae, Platysternidae, Podocnemididae) is more generalized.
In terrestrial turtles, the long scapular prong and the short coracoid are associated with a domed shell and a mode of locomotion in which walking is predominant.
