A normalized incongruence length metric is used to assay the relative merit of the multiple analyses.
For the first time a data analysis recognizes a clade of acoelomates, the Platyzoa (sensu Cavalier-Smith, 1998).
Other relationships that corroborate some morphological analyses are the existence of a clade that groups Gnathostomulida + Syndermata (=Gnathifera) that is expanded to include the enigmatic phylum Cycliophora, as sister group to Syndermata.

Since then, other taxa (primarily the Platyzoa and Bryozoa) have been suggested as being closer to Halanych et al.
Authors have differed on whether or not the name "Lophotrochozoa" should be extended to include those taxa.
Some authors have subsumed all under Lophotrochozoa, while others have restricted Lophotrochozoa to the phyla originally covered, and used the name Spiralia (indicating the protostome phyla with spiralian embryo development) for the larger clade of Lophotrochozoa + Platyzoa.

Genetic studies have considerably changed our understanding of the relationships within the Bilateria.
Most appear to belong to four major lineages: Deuterostomes Ecdysozoa Platyzoa Lophotrochozoa In addition to these, There are a few small groups of bilaterians With relatively similar Structure that appear to have diverged before these major groups.
The Myxozoa, single-celled parasites that were originally considered Protozoa, are now believed to have developed from the Bilateria as well.
