What Janet Jackson really exposed: plausible deniability often doesn't work
Plausible deniability was actually around much earlier than that -- it evolved in the early days of the Central Intelligence Agency as a way to insulate the president from recriminations stemming from the CIA's less pleasant covert operations.
Plausible deniability relies upon the lack of a paper trail or witnesses who can say "but we did tell you." Only in the movies do people lay out in written and exacting detail their schemes for world domination, or something slightly less odious.
But the board was dealing with such an accumulation of issues and headaches that plausible deniability wasn't of interest to it, and it accepted his resignation.

Denial is a subconscious coping and defense mechanism that provides a person with a psychologically bearable method to: 1.
When we engage in denial it means that we either should or should not do a particular thing, and we proceed to rationalize and justify (fool ourselves) the reasons for either doing or not doing it.
Another form of denial is known as “plausible deniability,” which generally describes a situation in which a person consciously or sub-consciously and actively avoids gaining certain facts and knowledge that he or she knows or suspects to exist because there is a psychological benefit in not knowing.

(See next entry.) I couldn't find "plausible deniability." But here's what I think it means: A leader approves a course of action with a "escape clause," deniability that allows him or her deny knowledge of the operation if anything goes wrong.
Plausible just means "an appearance of truth." The leader can lie and there's a good possibility that the lie will be believed.

"The Iran-Contra Affair: Government by Cabal," by Theodore Draper
Above all, covert operations prized "deniability" or, as it was often termed, "plausible deniability." Since such operations were inherently dangerous, politically or otherwise, it was not enough to carry them out; ideally, they were set up in such a way that they could be disavowed if they miscarried.
North used "plausible deniability" as a justification for employing Secord in his operations: "We were trying to provide a plausibly deniable link directly back to the U.S. government; and it was accepted that he could provide that kind of deniability.
By their nature, covert operations make it possible to put the good name or best interests of the country in such jeopardy that the only way to escape from the cost of failure or exposure is the ability to deny that they ever happened or to put the blame on someone else.

"Plausible deniability" in OTFE systems is largely based on the theory that you can claim that your volume files are not encrypted data; you don't know what they are - you can't be expected to know every operation that your OS carries out!
Raising reasonable doubt as to what your volumes files really are is the aim of "plausible deniability"; leaving it up to the prosecution to prove, beyond reasonable doubt, they store encrypted data.
Here the concept of "plausible deniability" is much stronger; theoretically an attacker is not able to determine (let alone prove) whether or not such a hidden volume is present.

The flaw is also present in the protocols SIGMA [18] and #0, #1 [6] from which IKEv2 and parts of IKE have evolved.

But in statements they later denied making, both Conte and BALCO Vice President James Valente, also indicted, told investigators that Anderson was supplying steroids to Bonds, court records show.
