Great Big Sea, a maritime folk-rockin' band from Canada's adopted child, Newfoundland, completely wowed a Philadelphia audience Friday despite a lukewarm warm-up band, perpetual sound problems, a mediocre performance space and a thirsty crowd.
But fortunately, Great Big Sea always puts on a dynamic show; from the opening bodhran beat of "Process Man" through to the second encore, the Painted Bride auditorium was filled with fun, unceasing energy and some very great music.
Great Big Sea seems able to work with any conditions, using whatever space is available to them to great advantage.

As for their original material, "Sea of No Cares" straddles narrative and the world of feelings as it describes a man falling in love and leaving his friends "getting cynically stoned" at the bar.

The Great Big Sea have two albums that both went platinum in Canada, and are currently promoting a USA-only collection of their Canadian hits called Rant and Roar.
Surprisingly, the crowd at the venue seemed to be there to hear this band play their "traditional" Newfoundland rock rather than get loaded and wear green, although plenty of Guinness did manage to flow up to the stage.
Great Big Sea are special in that they, as not so much a rock and roll band as a "traditional" band, have firmly set themselves a place in the world music scene.

The songs they did play were mostly from the new album, "The Hard and The Easy", with the exception of one from their album "Up".
We, of course, thought they sounded great and should have stayed playing for us but were all grateful for the time they did spare us.
