Topic: Play (Squeeze album)

Squeeze - Music Downloads - Online
Squeeze never came close to matching the popularity of the Beatles, but the reason for that is part of their charm.
Squeeze began playing the thriving pub rock circuit, although their songs were quirkier and more pop-oriented than many of their peers.
Squeeze released their debut EP, Packet of Three, on Deptford Fun City Records, in the summer of 1977 and soon arranged an international contract with A&M Records, becoming the label's first new wave act since their disastrous signing of the Sex Pistols.

Squeeze released a live album, A Round and a Bout, on I.R.S. in the spring of 1990.
The resulting album, Play, was released in the fall of 1991 to little attention, partially because it received no support from the label.
Squeeze resigned from A&M Records in early 1993 and recorded their new album, Some Fantastic Place, with Thomas on drums and Paul Carrack on keyboards.

Inspired heavily by the Beatles and the Kinks, Squeeze was the vehicle for the songwriting of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, who were hailed as the heirs to Lennon and McCartney's throne during their heyday in the early '80s.
In America, the band and album had to change their name to UK Squeeze, in order to avoid confusion with an American band called Tight Squeeze; by the end of the year, they had reverted back to Squeeze in the U.S..
Initially, the album was to be produced by Dave Edmunds, but the group scrapped those sessions to work with Elvis Costello and Roger Bechirian.

 Chris Difford: Squeeze Play
Although the first single, "This Summer," went on to become Squeeze's first Top 40 hit in the UK in eight years, clear reception was still at a loss with the public.
Since IRS Records, Squeeze's current company, closed their doors July 11, Difford seems more determined to deal with the financial aspects of the current U.S. tour and focus on honing his songwriting skills rather than contend with media commentary on the band's popularity.
Squeeze then embarked on an exhaustive tour including a sold-out performance at Madison Square Garden and an appearance on "Saturday Night Live," followed by a series of record company shifts.

The British act (called UK Squeeze on early stateside releases) are back on American shores this fall with the full musical entourage - bassist Keith Wilkinson, drummer Gilson Lavis and keyboardist Don Snow - in tow.
Play, Squeeze's most cohesive and engaging work in recent years, delivers the same lyrical drama and twisting, lilting melodies that brought previous albums Argybargy (1980), East Side Story (1981) and Sweets From a Stranger (1982) critical acclaim - although the pace is less frantic, and the tone more poignant than before.
Play marks Squeeze's first release on Reprise/Warner - all previous efforts were on AandM - and this fresh start eventually led them to producer Tony Berg (Michael Penn, The New Bohemians).

 Squeeze
I have everything Squeeze ever released on CD other than a live album and a couple of greatest hits packages, but I'm planning to review them slowly, so don't be too taken aback by the glib one-liners I offer in several places.
With remarkable serendipity, Squeeze got off to a start with a disco novelty song that turned into a moderate hit single: "Take Me I'm Yours," which is driven by a really annoying, robotic synth line that would have been worthy of the Cars.
The record's oddest aspect is Difford's near-absence; he doesn't play a note on several tracks and he takes none of the lead vocals, although he's audible enough as a backing vocalist that you won't notice.

 Glenn Tilbrook: record label revolt
Sadly, just as Squeeze seemed to be hitting their stride and had gotten all of the kinks worked out, they were losing their backing in a major way.
Play is something of a departure for the band: Difford and Tilbrook's cheeky East London songs are conspicuous by their absence.
They released 10 albums in the 90s, but six of them were either compilations of their previous work or live albums.

Play - Squeeze - Song Listings
One of Squeeze's most mature and thoughtful albums, 1991's Play might be a bit pretentious in spots -- the liner notes are written out as a theatre script, with the songs laid out as dialogue -- but it's probably Squeeze's best post-reunion album.
Shorn of the misguided experiments of Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti and the naked chart ambitions of Babylon and On and Frank, Play is a simple and low-key collection of songs charting (loosely; this is less of a concept album than many reviews claimed at the time) the dissolution of a love affair.
Producer Tony Berg, unfortunately, occasionally obscures that character by drowning the songs in strings and mass backing vocals (including special appearances by Michael Penn, Wendie Colter, and Spinal Tap's Michael McKean and Christopher Guest!), but the Difford/Tilbrook songs are mostly strong enough to withstand the onslaught.

Maria Muldaur: Meet Me Where They Play The Blues
Twenty-five years after she sent her camel to bed in "Midnight at the Oasis," Muldaur delivers a soulful package of late night blues gems bolstered by a top-notch supporting cast.
The arrangements work to complement her delivery, with David Matthews' piano especially important in filling the space where Brown would have resided, and a three-piece horn section figuring prominently on several tracks.
Perhaps the theme song of Meet Me Where They Play the Blues is really "He Don't Have the Blues Anymore," for on this recording, Muldaur delivers a surefire cure for even the most intractable case of the blues.

But play it first time for your friends, and they'll probably say "what the hell kind of song is that?" I give 4 stars because the songs are musically interesting and surprising, which is more than you get from most bands.
So I don't think the Beatles have any real competition from Squeeze, but I think this album should be heard, and that Squeeze should get the credit it deserves as one of the most innovative bands of the 80's.
From the perfect melodic interplay of "House of Love" and "Satisfied" to the deep lyrical starkness of the pop-country tinged "The Truth" and the McCartney-like "Gone to the Dog's" this CD is a throwback to the day's when Beatles fans waited with intense longing for the next masterpiece from merrie old England.

Reduced to a quartet by Jools Holland 's departure for a career as a BBC television presenter (the group's South London homeboy Steve Nieve, tour keyboardist Matt Irving, and more implausibly, Bruce Hornsby provide the keyboards), the group play with a loose, RandB-inflected casualness.

This is heavy metal music played by humans with tremendously decelerated metabolisms, humans whose lifespans play out over centuries rather than decades.
The latter is a bit too abstract for me; I am reminded of the frequent criticism of Univers Zero's Heresie: the band makes a bit too much of a musical sacrifice in favor of evoking an evil atmosphere, and they lose my attention halfway through.

Hello, MP3 Album Music Download at eMusic
Here are the names of bands that flitted through the mind of a music critic while listening to the Capes' debut album, Hello: the Buzzcocks, Wire, Oasis, the Beatles, the Kinks, the Beach Boys, Squeeze, the Beatles (again), the Jam, the Kinks (again), the Beach Boys (again).
That is august company, of course, and it is also indicative of the Capes' music, which is catchy, guitar-based pop/rock that edges toward punk/new wave rock, but also boasts enough keyboard blips to show greater musical sophistication, along with occasional harmonies to sweeten things and often clever lyrics declaimed in clear British accents.
In the 2000s, they can admittedly sound somewhat retro at times, but the Capes manage to reinvent their influences for their own purposes and play with enough conviction to make this infectious music their own.
