The PlayStation Portable (PSP), at a discounted launch price of 19,800 yen ($189), went on sale 10 days after the successful launch of Nintendo DS, a game machine the size of a paperback book with a wireless connection and two screens, one of which is touch-sensitive and works with a pen-like device.
Sony has said it will ship just 500,000 units in Japan by the end of the year and it will miss the holiday season in the United States and Europe, where a launch is expected early next year.
Excitement over PlayStation Portable, with high-quality graphics normally only seen on a full game console, has been building for months with the Japanese press eagerly comparing it with the rival Nintendo DS, made by the company that brought the world games featuring characters Pokemon, Mario and Donkey Kong.

I was pretty confident that I'd have mine at launch despite Sony's shocking announcement in September that, due to parts shortages, the number of units headed to the U.S. on launch day (one million to be exact) would be sliced in half.
Sony is on the right track with the PS2 to succeed in the monumental task of achieving convergence while leaving both high-tech entertainment geeks (like yours truly) and casual video gamers begging for more.
Sony hopes to have its network on-line sometime in 2001, and will require a monthly subscription fee to access it.

The only possible problem having such a complex stealth gaming experience on your handheld is that with Splinter Cell (and most other stealth games) you have to take your time in order to stay quite, remain unseen, etc. You need precision, cunning, and time; this doesn’t make for the best ‘on the go’ gaming.
Capcom has announced a game from the Devil May Cry brand is coming to PSP, but they still haven’t announced if it will be a port, of which game, or if it will be a brand new romp for Dante on his new handheld home.
