  Playbills from Edinburgh’s Theatre Royal
The Theatre Royal was extremely important in the revival of Scottish culture during this period, and is often associated with popular stage adaptations of novels by Sir Walter Scott.
We have digitised a selection of over 240 playbills, which were used to advertise performances and events, using originals in the collection of the National Library of Scotland.
Search or browse the playbills to see who performed in a particular play or which musical events were scheduled for the same night.

Playbills come from the Harvard Theatre Collection's playbills of eastern Canada, the Archives of the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, and the New Brunswick Museum collection in Saint John.
The UNB playbills (120 citations) deal, largely, with theatre in Fredericton in the late 1880s and early 1890s.
The 60 playbills of the Museum collection reflect the theatrical scene in Saint John during the J.W. Lanergan years of the 1860s.

Secondary attractions range from dances to minor dramatic works to pantomimes, with sheets for consecutive evenings showing how a main attraction might be paired with a comedy one night and a musical entertainment the next.
All of the playbills list cast members by part, and the majority have a final banner promoting the next evening’s production.

A playbill is a broadside (a single sheet printed only on one side) issued by a theatre for a given performance on a certain date, containing information identifying the plays and other pieces and the performers and others concerned, along with other information useful or interesting to the audience.
Playbills were normally printed and issued on the day of performance and made available in the theatre, though bills for benefits might be printed as much as ten days in advance to assist beneficiaries in attracting audiences and selling tickets.
But playbills, to be playbills, do not have to say they are playbills; they simply are playbills, instantly recognizable as such.
