 HISTORY OF THE BRAMPTON PLAYHOUSE
The Players offered to buy it to convert it into a theatre and a price of £465 was eventually agreed.
New lighting and sound equipment were installed and on 15th May 1974, with the generous help of a benefactor who remains anonymous to this day, Brampton Players were at last able to purchase the Playhouse from original company set up in 1936.
The first main stage curtains were a gift from Lady Henley and the first tip-up seats came from the Empire Theatre in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The theatre was built by the Canadian motion picture distributor Nathan L. Nathanson, founder of Famous Players Canadian Corporation, the Canadian motion picture distributing arm of Adolph Zukor's Paramount Pictures.
Cineplex was able to force Famous Players to sell the theatre, but the victory was a Pyrrhic one; in a bitter legal fight, Famous Players won an injunction forbidding Cineplex from ever again using the theatre for motion pictures.
The Canon Theatre began its life in 1920 as a combination vaudeville and motion picture theatre in the Pantages theatre circuit.

At a meeting held on September 5, 1916, they decided to call themselves "The Provincetown Players" and, at O'Neill's suggestion, they named their new home in New York "The Playwright's Theatre." The promise of a new and different kind of theatre in New York had finaly begun to be realized.
We have all heard the recent announcement by NYU President Oliva concerning the acquisition and renovation of the Provincetown Playhouse to be used by the theatre departments at New York University.
The seeds that led to the creation of the Provincetown Players were planted in New York City in 1914 by George "Jig" Cram Cook and his wife, Susan Glaspell.

The management of the Players Theatre were about to transfer a little musical, Twenty Minutes South, to the St Martin's Theatre, and decided to get rid of its leading lady, Margaret Burton.
She usually found refuge in the winter months in Players' Theatre pantomimes (typically in Riquet in the Tuft), but she also played at other small theatres, including the Watergate, where she popped up in another revue, After The Show, in November 1950.
She was ideally suited to play Patty Moss in a revival of the operetta The Two Bouquets at the St Martin's Theatre in May 1953, and in May 1955 she briefly got entangled with a play, The Tender Trap, at the Saville Theatre, which left its cast out of work after 22 performances.

This led to James Light being named as the new director of a revitalized group of players, still called the Experimental Theatre Company, who continued to work in the Provincetown Playhouse.
This is the theatre, though many times since refurbished, that is known today as the Provincetown Playhouse.
James Weldon Johnson claimed that the Provincetown "was the initial and greatest force in opening up the way for the Negro on the dramatic stage." The company had withstood controversy and fought objections to the ideas they felt were most important.
