Often, when the character is tested to his/her limits on a point where the player cannot exert any influence, the ability scores are used to determine success or failure.
His seba score is then transferred to the next character of the player, who thus starts with a different (hopefully higher) seba score than the normal basic score.

Ravenloft: Player’s Handbook is a 256-page campaign sourcebook published by Sword and Sorcery.
Certainly not the fault of the current producers but the hoops of the industry that forced a new edition of a book only 2 years old, the expense of a new set of core books has been debated to death and while I found this an exceptional edition felt it was wholly unnecessary.
Ravenloft: Player’s Handbook, while mainly a re-release to update to the latest edition did provide some additional insights into this genre of DandD.
