If the best that can be said of Playing By Heart is that it feels like an extended improvisation for skilled actors, the necessary and darker flip-side of that statement is that the actors must rely on their own best impulses because the writing, directing, and production come to zilch.
With great dismay I discovered in the end credits that Playing By Heart was assembled by Pietro Scalia, the editor who co-constructed in JFK one of the truly dazzling monuments to his craft that the 1990s have seen.
Playing By Heart is the sort of failure that is easy to watch because of the agreeable persons on screen, but which nonetheless rests complacently in the faith that good actors will dress up the spindly, undeserving foundation.

Filmtracks: Playing by Heart (John Barry)
Playing by Heart: (John Barry) For all of 1999, only two tracks of John Barry's score for Playing by Heart had been available domestically in the United States on a commercial album.
As Jon Burlingame states in the album's notes, "L.A. musicians love to play on Barry dates because he is among the few true melodists writing movies these days." And it's because of this genuine style of thematic simplicity that the score functions so well, both within the film and alone on this album.
Playing by Heart won't be a good match for every film music fan, and it might not even interest those Barry fans who are attached to his grandiose scores with brass.

TheMovieBoy Review: Playing by Heart (1998)
"Playing by Heart" is an always-entertaining and fairly thoughtful film on the subject of love, and how everyone hopes for it in one way or another.
In Altmanesque fashion, "Playing by Heart" introduces us to various people one at a time living in L.A. and, switching back and forth between them, their personal stories begin to play out.
Even with its occasionally uneven structure, "Playing by Heart" ultimately turned out to in no way be a disappointment because when the film was good, it absolutely sparkled, thanks to the fast and quirky dialogue and the mature way in which the characters were handled.

Playing By Heart is details the love lives of five couples, whether at the beginning, middle or end stages or a product of parentage.
It doesn't play that way to me, but my preferences have always been for the female gender (and, with twenty dating years as a "nice guy" under my belt, I'm more akin with Anderson's character, who knows happiness ain't out there, but hasn't totally given up).
Playing By Heart was originally entitled Dancing About Architecture, from a phrase that goes "writing about love is like dancing about architecture.

She described herself as ‘a girl who plays violin and tells stories’, which as good an overall description of this woman’s amazing catalog of art.
Her 1982 album ‘Big Science’ (which included the single ‘O Superman’) is a record of peaceful, meditative pieces that, at close listening reveal an artist trying to explain the world to herself and, by extension, to all of us.
As Steven Drodz played counter melody on his cheapo Casio and Michael Ivins thrummed bass and Kliph Scurlock pounded drums (letter perfect, btw, on the aforementioned ‘War Pigs’) and Dave Fridman banged all Sonic Youth-like on Coyne’s old Jazzmaster, Coyne himself melded his wild theremin with the sax player and brought the house down.

 Movie (Metro Times Detroit)
That the newly minted couples in Playing by Heart, written and directed by Willard Carroll, say it with the alarming speed of movies from the past identifies the film as a romantic throwback, as does the strong conviction that the primal relationship in people’s lives is between lovers.
This is ironic, because Carroll utilizes a family to construct Playing by Heart’s spine.
Playing by Heart portrays love as the ultimate healer but, overall, the relationships represented are just facets of a conventional romanticism that’s appealingly diverting, though rarely enlightening.

 Artsandentertainment: Playing with heart
The duo and their band dazzled 2,200 fans with a distinctly '70s aesthetic -- visually, that is. Ann, 52, and Nancy, 48, both dressed in hip-hugging jeans with groovy applique, set the stage with a dozen candles, red lava lamps and burning incense.
That song, certainly among Heart's cheesiest from the 1980s, was given dignity by Ann's powerful vocal, turning the most pedestrian lines -- "I never really cared until I met you" -- into something real.
The crowd roared for Magic Man and the rollicking Barracuda, which, by the way, should be the soundtrack for the next of those car commercials celebrating a generation's edgy vibe.
