DVD Talk Review: Playtime - Criterion Collection
Jacques Tati's 1967 masterpiece, Playtime, is one of those special films that entertains as it enlightens.
Filmed with very little dialogue, the story of Playtime was more like an unreal vision of what could have been the Paris of tomorrow than it was a contemporary take on the city; yet, by showing where people were heading, Tati was able to say some things about where they already were.
The final image that sticks with the audience as Playtime nears its end is when the courted American woman finds a small brooch shaped like a flower at the bottom of the gift box Hulot gave her.

 The Criterion Collection: Playtime
This was during the period when Playtime was first showing in the United States, in various cuts over which he had no control, and there were times during our sessions together, often in the late afternoon, when he sank into gloom.
Playtime is a movie that unfolds entirely in a public space defined by that set.
Playtime assumes a precise contiguity and continuity with the public space of a theater, where we share its experience with others—just as the customers and employees of the Royal Garden eventually manage to carve out a common social investment in an establishment that’s gradually disintegrating around them.

Playtime Review -- Roger Ebert's Overlooked Film Festival
Jacques Tati's "Playtime," like "2001: A Space Odyssey" or "The Blair Witch Project" or "Russian Ark," is one of a kind, complete in itself, a species already extinct at the moment of its birth.
Tati made "Playtime" without a story, with dialogue (mostly in English) that is inaudible or disposable, and without a hero.
In "Playtime," we are surrounded by modern architecture, but glass doors reflect the Eiffel Tower, the Church of the Sacred Heart in Montmartre and the deep blue sky.

Playtime is the epic of the modern world.
Playtime is firstly a set: the hall of an airport, the interior and surroundings of some modern buildings, and the interior of a restaurant.
Playtime was to have a very bad career: Hulot is not visible enough, and the number of cinema rooms with 70 mm projectors is too small.

Playtime Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Critics have often referred to Playtime as a critique of modern urban society, but it would be silly to take this interpretation too literally: it discounts the obvious delight Tati took in up-to-the-minute contrivances, and neglects the fact that the Paris of the movie never existed — it's a fantasy, an abstraction.
Playtime is presented in its original theatrical ratio of 1.85:1, with digitally restored picture and Dolby mono sound based on a 35mm interpositive and 35mm mag tracks.
In the interim, setting the player's aspect ratio to 'widescreen' or 16:9 (as if the viewer has a widescreen TV set) and the television to 4:3 (only necessary if the viewer has a widescreen TV), will cause the supplements to play back in their correct 4:3 full-screen aspect ratio.

 The Criterion Collection: Playtime
I suppose it could be argued that I saw Playtime for the first time in ideal circumstances—as an American tourist in Paris.
In this respect, Playtime has an unexpected affinity with Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (a film that, incidentally, Tati adored and that also originally clocked in at about 155 minutes)—in its wide-screen project to reeducate us by disrupting some of our basic habits in organizing visual and spatial data.
Playtime proposed a particularly euphoric form of reengagement with public space, suggesting ways of looking and finding connections, comic and otherwise, between supposedly disconnected street details—not to mention connections between those details and myself.

 Jacque Tati's Playtime
"Playtime is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1.
Obviously, the normally thorough cineastes at The Criterion Collection have made a mistake in their "About the Transfer" declaration on the jacket insert that comes with the newly remastered, two-platter release of Jacques Tati's "Playtime" (retail $39.99), since the aspect ratio of a 65mm film is quite a deal more than 1.85:1.
What they mean is that the aspect ratio of the 35mm reduction internegative is being presented, not the aspect ratio of the film Tati shot.

"Playtime" opened at an awkward time in Paris, just as all kinds of social revolutions were taking place and it was viewed as an old-fashioned relic.
"Playtime" is also available on a DVD from the Criterion Collection, which has been the subject of some debate.
Some of the printings were mastered in the wrong aspect ratio, which cuts off a hint of the image at the sides.

 DVD Savant Review: Playtime
Playtime has to be the most elaborate experimental film ever made, a mime-driven silent comedy on a lavish scale.
Other critics think that Playtime expresses an apocalyptic vision of man overtaken by his own architecture, but the film is far too optimistic for that.
Au-delà de "Playtime" is an all-too brief assemblage of behind-the scenes footage showing the construction of the huge sets and Tati working with actors.

 Playtime (Tati, 1967)
Seen in a theater on a 70 mm print, as it was meant to be seen, the comedy flows through you like a drug and each new high is found in the very next frame or even somewhere else in the existing frame.
The American influence is increasingly felt in each, until Playtime, where the presence of American tourists, large skyscrapers, obsession with useless gadgets, and the barriers the modern world places between individual communication is the sign of cultural domination.
To categorize this film as a comedy is doing it a major disservice, as it far greater than the sum of its laughs and gags - it is a new way of seeing the world around us and is both life affirming in its vision and brilliant in its satire.

 Jacques Tati
Playtime, which Tati worked on for nearly the whole span of time since Mon Oncle, which netted him the Academy Award as well as the Cannes Film Festival's Prix spécial du Jury, was extremely costly, with journalists estimating the budget as being anywhere between five and twelve million francs.
The project was beset by disaster: in August of 1964, when Tativille - the miniature city that had to be built to accommodate the director's vision - was almost finished, gusts of wind knocked down many of the structures, causing over one million in damages.
At the time of this writing, I know of two upcoming showings of Playtime: a remastered 70mm print at the 2002 Festival de Cannes, and a 16mm print that will be shown on June 9 at the Galapagos Art & Performance Space in Brooklyn, New York.

Tati's alter ego, the ever polite, angular Monsieur Hulot, is let loose on a Paris dominated by modern offices, pristine glass surfaces and scurrying, over-officious French nine-to-fivers.
In fact, I would go as far as to say that the Big Guy of Cinema must have had DVD in mind when he thought of PLAYTIME, as this is one of those classics which you will want to see again and again, and not get bored doing so.
I had a very, very vague memory of seeing Playtime many years ago in a double-bill with Tati's Trafic and finding the experience a painful and almost completely laughter-free one (although Trafic did have one great sight gag involving changing a car wheel).

WORKERS PLAYTIME finds Billy Bragg continuing his proud tradition of mixing earnest tales of failed romance with unapologetically leftist political rants, a melange addressed rather humbly on the powerful, anthemic closer, "Waiting For The Great Leap Forwards".
His lyrical wit is also at an apex, from the wordplay of "The Short Answer" to the soulful drama of the timeless-sounding "Valentine's Day Is Over".
Political numbers are few, but potent--"Rotting On Remand" has a Tin Pan Alley feel and decries the desperate state of Britain's penal system, while Bragg is stripped to his sparest yet on the a cappella "Tender Comrade".

Using a blend of powerful testimony, moving narrative, insightful analysis and practical advice, Bullycide: death at playtime validates the experience of being bullied at school and enables scars to heal, trauma to diminish, self-esteem to return and confidence to grow.
The book reveals negative stereotypes ("weak", "sensitive" etc) to be projections of the bully's own weakness and inadequacy and that so-called "victim characteristics" are misperceptions of strengths to be valued and cherished.
Bullycide: death at playtime gives families and children who have been driven to suicide by bullying a voice to enable the truth to be heard, sometimes for the first time.
