	Penn Township - The History of Jefferson County, Iowa 1879
		Bowen, W. merchant, Pleasant Plain; born in Franklin Co., N. Y., in 1850; educated at Lawrenceville Academy, St. Lawrence Co., N. Y.; came to Pleasant Plain in 1874, and engaged in the mercantile business; his store is stocked with a full assortment of dry goods and notions, hats and caps, boots and shoes.
		He bought the land on which the greater portion of Pleasant Plain now stands, and laid out the western portion of the town; has always been closely identified with its interests, taking a part in everything that tended to the advancement of the town and the prosperity of its citizens.
		Hiatt, Samuel, farmer; P. Pleasant Plain; an early settler of this county; is a native of Guilford Co., N. C.; born in 1805; came to Jefferson Co., in 1841.

		By 1875 Iowa Yearly Meeting had directed that each Monthly Meeting have a committee on pastoral care over the entire membership, who will be expected to extend pastoral care toward all the flock by visiting each family by two or more of their number to encourage an establishment and growth in the divine life.
		For their benefit we would state that Pleasant Plain is in the northeast corner of Jefferson county, on the Southwestern Branch of the C., R. and P. The surrounding country is probably as rich in soil, and affords as many facilities for successful agriculture, as any portion of the State.
		As the school was in session during Pleasant Plain’s more prosperous times the railroad passed near the school house and the efficiency of the school teacher was often judged by her ability to keep the youngsters from playing upon the right-of-way.

		Various locations were suggested for the annual gatherings, which, after being “freely discussed in much harmony and condescension”, the conference united in recommending to their home meetings that the gatherings be held “in the vicinity of Oskaloosa, in Mahaska County”—an indefinite recommendation which was fraught with may difficulties.
		We found large and respectable bodies of Friends at Red Cedar, Bangor, South River, Pleasant Plain, and Salem Quarterly meetings, and entered into much sympathy with them in their situation, and also in regard to their proposition, concerning which we found a united sentiment at each meeting.

		That man claims the abuse started in about 1953, when he was 5 years old, and continued until the summer of 1962, according to the lawsuit.
		The lawsuit shows Bass worked in various pastoral positions during his career, including St. Mary's Parish in Clinton, Eddyville, East Pleasant Plain, Newton, Iowa City, St. Patrick's Parish in Delmar and St. Anne's Parish in Welton, ending his work in the Diocese of Davenport in 1992.
