The beer is a variation on the brewery's draught Black Bess Porter, and the name reflects not only the appropriate colouring of the birds in question, but also the fact that a donation from every bottle apparently goes to Penguin World at Marwell Zoo.
The porter is a good fl, though the head is coffeeish rather than white (a muddy penguin, perhaps?), and the aroma is particularly striking and inviting, very rich, smoothly fruity with some hops, a slight chocolate scent and sweetish esters.
The palate is firm, with burnt malt (Maris Otter is used, in various different colours), hints of plums and a fudgey quality, rapidly becoming dry and slightly tannic but very well-balanced, with a marked bitter sting in the finish.

Elkus said the proposal is largely supported by his landlords, who own the new Pleasant Street building, because they expected business to spill out onto the street and widened the sidewalk there to accommodate it.
