The median income for a household in the county was $32,736, and the median income for a family was $37,795.

James Pleasants Jr., was born in Goochland County, Virginia on October 24, 1769.
He served in the Virginia General Assembly from 1796 to 1803 and was the clerk of the Virginia lower house from 1803 to 1810.

The county was created in 1851 from Wood, Tyler and Ritchie Counties, and named for James Pleasants, Jr., who represented Virginia in the United States Senate, and who was its governor, 1822-1825.
The county's early development was due to resources of oil and natural gas.
It was originally chartered in 1851 and named by its founder, Alexander H. Creel, in honor of the Virgin Mary, who according to legend appeared to him in a vision one night as the steamer upon which he was traveling on the Ohio River was passing the point where he afterwards established the town.

The building is presently being used by the Preston County Board of Education for storage purposes.
Kim Varner [klvarner@yahoo.com] whose father was caretaker of the Preston County Poor House in Kingwood, and whose family lived there from 1973 until 2 years ago, has shared with us some wonderful photographs (then and now) in a photo album.
They were replaced by annual contracts made by the county with private households where the poor were "consigned" for care.
