 Gordon's Plecoptera (Stoneflies)Page
The Plecoptera are an ancient an beautiful order of insects with the earliest known fossils dating from the Permian, they are popularly known as Stoneflies (because they are often seen resting on stones), they are soft bodied small to medium sized hemimetabolous insects.
There are about 2 000 named species all with aquatic larva, most of whom live only in cool waters, generally running streams or lakes with a upper temperature limit of 25 degrees C. The adults have little difference in texture between the hind and fore wings, and are rather poor fliers.

 Order Plecoptera
The Plecoptera (stoneflies), all of which are aquatic as nymphs, are considered to be the most primitive order of living Neoptera.
The order Plecoptera belongs to the infraclass Neoptera because stoneflies' wings fold over their backs at rest.
Wings develop in external wingpads, a characteristic that places Plecoptera in the division Exopterygota.

This list provides a recent update to the Plecoptera of Michigan, and is based on a recent publication by Grubbs and Bright (2003).
There are currently about 26 genera and about 59 species recorded for Michigan, with additional species occurring nearby (these are noted with state localities from which certified records have been published).
Future sample processing and more thorough sampling across the state will undoubtedly increase the taxonomic representation of Plecoptera in Michigan.

With the aid of a grant in 1995 from the Maryland Natural Heritage Program (since renamed the Heritage and Biodiversity Conservation Program), I undertook the responsibility of attempting to document the distribution of rare and uncommon Appalachian species, including Allocapnia frumi and Sweltsa pocahontas.
In summer 1999 I submitted a report (Annotated List of the Diversity, Distribution, and Conservation Status of the Stoneflies (Insecta; Plecoptera) of Maryland) to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources that provided an overview of the distribution of all species within the Appalachian region.
Starting in year 2000, I will refocus my efforts mainly to the remainder of the state, emphasizing drainage systems of the Piedmont and Coastal Plain Physiographic Provinces.
