The older classifica- tions had associated the Wood and the Mandarin ducks with the river ducks of the genus,4has.
The genus,41x had been relegated to that position in the revisions of Salvadori's subfamily Plectropterinae (1895) by Phillips and Peters.
In addition, Peters removed the Muscovy Duck from the same sub- family and placed it within the Anatinae, diametrically opposed to the posi- tion of the Wood and Mandarin ducks.

The scaups apparently take a higher proportion of animal food than the other species of the pochard tribe.
PERCI-IING DUCKS This very peculiar group of ducks had already been separated by Salvadori, as a subfamily (Plectropterinae), and, in our opinion, it was a mistake of modern authors to remove from it the Mandarin ("Den- dronessa" galericulata) and the Carolina Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) and place them among the river ducks.
