	Mysterious Maid of the Mountains--The Taiwan Pleione
		A pleione from Mt. Ali-the first to appear on the international stage-had a 20-centimeter inflorescence (flower-bearing stem) with two bright red flowers, each with four "keels" (raised folds of tissue) on its "lip" (or "labellum"-the lowest of an orchid flower's three petals, specially shaped to attract pollinating insects).
		The pleiones of Mt. Taiping in Ilan County have much larger bulbs and blooms than those of other areas, so their bulbs were harvested in huge quantities by orchid merchants, at the rate of over a million each year.
		Pleiones do not grow in soil, so except for the water they are able to get from rain showers, most of the time they rely on moisture in the air.

		In their native environment:- Pleiones grow in a monsoon climate, either as epiphytes on trees or terrestrially, but they are always growing in free draining organic compost in a semi-shaded site.
		Pleiones are delightful plants producing in Sept - October a diverse range of dainty orchid shaped flowers from 2" (50mm) - 6" (150mm) high.

		Pleione are a small group of around 25 cool and alpine growing orchids mostly from China, Northern India, Thailand and Nepal and naturally grow close to the snow line at the edges of woods and forests.

		Pleione hybrids (I) One of the most important developments in Pleiones was made in the 70s when Dr. Harberd crossed the easy going Pleione formosana with the tricky Pleione x confusa, a natural yellow hybrid to produce the stunning Shantung hybrids.
		Because Pleione species are so variable, the hybrids are variable so the hybrid is given a name, and then particular selection or clone is given a further name.
		Interestingly the the colour of Shantungs is affected by the winter rest temperature so that different years the same plant can appear in different shades.
