When Plenty was first produced on the stage, its compelling vision of our postwar decline, seen through the eyes of a wartime heroine, had its edge dulled by a hectoring moral righteousness.
Balance is restored in Schepisi's film, largely by the obvious filmic process of shifting the point of view among the characters.
The life of Susan Traherne (Streep) suffers a steady decline alongside the more retrograde incidents of our history (Festival of Britain, Suez), until her only option is to take to the road as a vagrant to try and recapture her former glory as a spy in World War II France, when the world seemed young.

One of the most popular hits at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, Hav Plenty is the story of Lee Plenty, a broke wannabe writer who doesn't mind living his life on the streets and on the occasional friend's couch.
Chenoa This film was shot in three-and-half weeks in the middle of one of the hottest summers in New York City.
It was a low-budget film, so we're sitting in a car, in the middle of summer, shooting these scenes for the middle of the winter and we're sweating and so hot.

Plenty is a film of rich textures, one we can almost smell and taste as we watch it.
Plenty is about idealism and disillusionment, about hypocracy and naivete, about promises never fulfilled, or that may be unfulfillable.

Sure, I realize the film was touted as Connery's last film in the bond role, but I would have though someone could have come up with a more original approach to this 1983 film.
Connery bonds with plenty of women in Never Say Never Again, but there's something a bit disturbing when one realizes he's bedding chicks that are roughly half his age (Connery was 53-years-old when this was released, after all).
While earlier Bond films featured plenty of pop references, those were typically in the background and tended to not get in the way of the story.
