But both GEC and Plessey were entirely answerable to their shareholders, and both companies were inextricably in the coils of the major customers, British Telecom, the Department of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Defence.
Plessey is such an important name in the history of Swindon that it is also difficult to overstate its role in the development as the town as we know it today.
For years after Plessey closed, the social club was called the ex-Plessey Club and was to be one of the most persistent reminders of its former glory after the firm's importance as an employer declined.

A Plessey 250 memory referencing instruction names a capability register that must hold a memory capability.

I think the Plessey 250 literature did not use the term “address space”.

Efficient Support for Unique Names in Capabilities - Homepage of Prof. Dr. J.L.Keedy
The machine architecture of the Monads II and Monads-PC systems supports a set of capability registers, into which segment capabilities can be loaded by special instructions.
(Earlier systems such as the Plessey System 250 had capability registers containing main memory addresses, not virtual addresses.) Addressing modes in programs thus have variants of the form «cap.reg.#, offset», so that the long unique virtual addresses do not adversely influence program size or efficient addressing.
The persistent virtual memory is decomposed into "address spaces", each of which is allocated a 28 bit addressing range, so that a large persistent virtual address can be viewed as a two part entity: «address space #, offset in address space», as shown.

The only real solution is hardware support, as in the current Multics [l3] or the Plessey 250 [4].
