A comparative morphological treatise of recent and fossil otoliths of the order Pleuronectiformes
Taxonomic work with pleuronectiform otoliths is somewhat hampered by the often high degree of intraspecific variability, the low level of interspecific morphological differentiation and of course the ubiquitous effects of asymmetry.
The descriptions and figures of the pleuronectiform otoliths are arranged in 40 informal "genus groups", distributed through 8 families and one group of genera of uncertain relationship, reflecting the results of the otolith analyses.
Due to the nature of the flatfishes, special emphasis is paid to side dimorphism of their otoliths, which is reflected in depicting otoliths of both sides of the fishes as far as this was achievable.

Os et ligaments intermusculaires chez les poissons plats   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The purpose of this work is to examine the results of Patterson and Johnson (1995) on the evolution of intermuscular bones in Pleuronectiformes.
On the basis of the presence of these peculiar bones and the location of the first ribs in two flatfish families (Bothidae and Samaridae), these authors suggested that these families might be closely relatives and insisted on the value of intermuscular bones and ligaments to assess interrelationships amongst flatfish clades.
Our study, based on 417 specimens belonging to 93 species, 47 genera and 12 pleuronectiform families, shows that intermuscular structures are a useful source of phylogenetic characters.
