 DNA-Based Reclassification of the Pleurothallids
Pleurothallis (as proposed by Pridgeon et al.): These are the "core species" of the proposed genus Pleurothallis.
In this case, the DNA evidence seems convincing that at least some of the species segregated into this new genus (consisting of Pleurothallis subgenus Acuminatae) are not closely related to Acianthera, Pleurothallis, or Specklinia, in spite of morphological similarities.
Their proposed genus Phloeophila, containing Luerella pelecaniceps, Pleurothallis peperomioides, and Ophidion pleurothallopsis, combines very different things; but their own data shows that there is a large genetic distance between them, and the placement of Ophidion is inconsistent in the different analyses.

 Pleurothallis
Pleurothallis has about 1100 species, which makes it the largest genus of the Orchidaceae.
There are of course also mini-orchids within other genera, such as Masdevallia, Stelis, Trichosalpinx and Trisetella, while, on the other hand, Myoxanthus looks like a giant Pleurothallis.
These species are portrayed on the general Orchids page*, but when they were attributed to Pleurothallis in a recent past, they're also below on this page.

Royal Horticultural Society - Publications: The Orchid Review November-December 2005
Pleurothallis is a whole world of strange species; more than 1,600 have been recorded from Mexico to northern Argentina.
As most species do not have a set growth period, producing new leaves and flowers at any time, it is good to alternate applications of growth (30:10:10) and blossom-boosting (8:16:32) fertilisers, but do not give any during a hot spell.
Pleurothallis species make as much new growth in early autumn as in spring.

At yesterday's (Feb. 22) Orchid Society of the Ozarks meeting, Bryon Rinke, a Pleurothallis expert who grows orchids with Max Thompson at the Southwestern College of Winfield, Kansas, was onhand to discuss the particulars of this unique orchid Genus.
He brought some plants to sell, and we managed to get a hold of this Pleurothallis cardiothala, a Glossary Term: species
While, because of their diminutive size, Pleurothallis will more than likely never be grown or bought by folks looking for, say, a "splashy" Mother's Day gift, these orchids are fascinating members of the orchid family and, if you're a collector, I urge you to give some a try.
