Plone (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1997 the band were approached by Wurlitzer Jukebox who released the single "Press a Key".
On the strength of this the band were signed to Warp and in September 1998 released the single 'plock'.
While the band rushed to deliver their second album, Rob died in the September of that year, Steve Beckett (co-founder of Warp) made it aware he wasn't fond of bands like Broadcast or Plone that were currently on the label.

What does Plone mean? How is it pronounced? — plone.org   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The word Plone originally comes from the electronic band Plone that used to exist on the Warp record label.
The founders of Plone-the-Software (Alan Runyan and Alexander Limi) were listening to Plone-the-Band when they met (as well as during the initial coding/design of Plone) - and one of the original quotes floating around at the time was that "Plone should look and feel like the band sounds".
Plone is pronounced in the same manner as the word "grown".

 Plone
Many comparisons were made between Plone and the Skam artists, particularly since Plone employs synth strings (like Bola) and is influenced by children's TV from the 70s and 80s (like B of C).
Plone's music is medium-cool, yellow and green, employing simple, traditional song structures, and featuring bright, cheery melodies and simple 909 rhythms.
At least, that was my childhood; somehow, listening to Plone, I find myself reliving those memories all too vividly.

BBC - Radio 1 - Keeping It Peel - Plone
Birmingham electro fetish trio Plone formed in 1994 and comprised of keyboard players Mike Bainbridge, Michael Johnston and Mark Cancellara and their obsession with analogue synthesisers.
After playing a number of low-key gigs, the band's debut single 'Press A Key' was released on indie label Wurlitzer Jukebox in 1997.
An appearance at John Peel's Meldown Festival in London raised their profile and their debut album 'For Beginner Piano' arrived in 1999, which saw them experiment further with Kraftwerkian sounds and the sort of jingles that the BBC Radiophonic Workshop used to record to play behind the test card.

Plone has proven to be especially suited for this niche, being widely recognized as one of the best Open Source Content Management Systems out there.
The first suggestion was to make use of RDF, and though this initially seemed like a great idea, it quickly got dropped because of our lack of immediate knowledge and the fact that we would have to introduce yet another library dependency, which was not desired in the short term.
The fact that we expect this to be available by default in the next major release of Plone is yet another reason not to add more dependencies.

Amazon.com: For Beginner Piano: Music: Plone   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The music of Plone, a sonically erudite British trio who have released highly acclaimed singles on the Warp and Wurlitzer Jukebox labels, is deceptively simple and nursery rhymeish.
Plone is clearly influenced by coolster retro sounds--Atari video games, cocktail lounge music, soundtrack music (in particular those to 1950s sci-fi flicks and 1960s spaghetti Western films), das Kraftwerk, early '80s electrobeat, and Casio keyboard music.
One of the more interesting things about Plone is the way that modern, computer-based manipulation of sound is brought to moldy analog synths; there are multiple, delicately lopped and smudged layers of sound to each track.

At times some songs (Bibi Plone) threaten to collapse under the weight of kitsch, and although one can understand why this side to Plone is given the chance to run wild on occasion they knowingly, reassuringly keep it under control for the most part.
Minor judgemental flaws are apparent but Plone's remarkable ability to create a distinctive and compelling soundscape recalls the similarly unique talents of film composers Danny Elfman and Wendy Carlos, and by any standards that has to be illustrious company to keep.
