Plot coupon Biography on DanceAge (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.unc.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-17)
A plot coupon is an object whose possession or use is necessary in order to resolve the conflict upon which the plot hangs, when this necessity clearly springs from the arbitrary decision of the author to make it so necessary.
Plot coupons are fairly common in fantasy, mostly because they work well within an epic quest structure; but they occur in all the other varieties of fiction as well.
Plot Vouchers are a staple of James Bond movies, where 007 usually receives a random collection of high-tech gadgets from Q near the beginning of the film - and inevitably, by the end of the movie, he'll have needed them all, no matter how narrow their application and unlikely the situation.

A plot device is a person or an object introduced to a story to affect or advance the plot.
A poorly-written story, on the other hand, may have such awkward or contrived plot devices that the reader has serious trouble maintaining suspension of disbelief; indeed, the devices may even leave plot holes.
In humor-themed forms of entertainment, particularly those that break the fourth wall in pursuit of comedy, plot devices or the concept itself may be deliberately pointed out to the audience for a joke.

Many advertisers feel that a coupon based promotional campaign is a waste of time and money in this dot com world; but people in the know have a different approach.
The idea behind older coupon redemption methods was to get the potential customer to visit the store, and while they were there buying your coupon-based products or services at a loss (or at best at break-even), they would discover other bargains that would make-up for what they lose on the coupon.
