Ploughs are also used by industry underseas, for the laying of cables, as well as preparing the earth for side-scan sonar in a process used in oil exploration.
Ploughs were initially pulled by humans, later by oxen, and later still in some countries, by horses.
On a vehicle such as a tram, a plough is also the name commonly given to the pair of shoes, one pick-up and one return, both attached to a busbar, that draw power from a pair of live rails underneath the road.

PLOUGHS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Ploughs.-The plough is primarily designed to prepare the ground for cultivation by turning it over, thus burying the weeds and loosening the earth.
The furrows in this class of ploughing are usually about 4 inches deep, and from the fibrous roots in and compact nature of the soil the duty is very heavy; hence the length of the plough is increased, and a wheel-coulter is employed.
The plough is pivoted so that it may be moved from side to side of the beam when at the end of the furrow.

History of the Plough   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Therefore, ploughs have to have a means of front furrow width adjustment to ensure the plough is compatible to the tractor wheel settings.
In the days of conventional ploughs, front furrow width was adjusted by rotating the cross shaft to enable the plough to be steered either towards the land or work, thus making the front furrow wider or narrower.
A plough frame has to with stand very high twisting forces, especially when in transport mode and therefore has to be flexible to absorb the stresses and strains, yet rigid enough to maintain alignment accuracy.

Plough went into the game slightly under strength but they did have the bonus of Mark Chambers returning to the side to renew his partnership at the back with veteran Kevin Reddington.
Whilst the Plough looked dangerous at one end, they were defending very well at the other as the Swan looked to use their physical element by winning a number of throws around the area.

The Origins of Plough Monday, by Peter Millington   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Plough Monday is a moveable festival, but the range of days on which it can occur varies with the definition used (Figure 1).
Having said this however, the Plough Monday distribution does correspond approximately with the northern half of the region where the open field system of farming was used.
Plough Monday customs may have been discontinued at an early date, for instance as a result of the Puritan movement which was particularly strong in the area (McGrath, 1967).

The Harappans used a plough and the Rig Vedic word for it, 'langala', was probably derived from proto-Dravidian 'nangol', a variant of 'njengol'.
Terracotta toy plough, unearthed from Mohenjo-Daro, was also proof enough to say that the Harappans used a plough in their agricultural activities thousands of years ago.
The discovery of a ploughed field, to the southeast of the pre-Harappan settlement, was considered as the earliest of its kind anywhere in the world.

 The Round Plough
In consequence the trueness and flatness of the wood parts of the plough are less important: tolerances are greater, and there is no fiddling with pesky and inadequate bits of paper to level the blade.
In consequence the circular plough blade, unlike most blades for precise work, need not be stropped; which is just as well since, whichever way the base of the blade is moved on the strop, some part of the edge tends to slice in.
Their character is just the opposite of some modern-design ploughs, like those of Derek Beck, where greater precision, more moving parts, and smaller tolerances are used to reduce the amount of skill demanded--with an obvious increase in the price of the tool.

The word "Stot" means bullock and this was the name transferred from the animals that normally pulled the plough to the boys who did it on Epiphany.
It is still tradition today that on the 1st Sunday after Epiphany (Plough Sunday) the plough is taken to St Mary's church to be blessed.
