If the weather is too dry the plums will not develop past a certain stage, but will fall from the tree while still tiny green buds, and if it is unseasonably wet or if the plums are not harvested as soon as they are ripe, the fruit may develop a fungal condition called brown rot.
Plum is used as a food plant by the larvae of some Lepidoptera including November Moth, Willow Beauty and Short-cloaked Moth.

 Guardian | My grandfather, Plum
Plum lived for cricket: in 1945, when my mother, very young and Italian, arrived in England for the first time, on one of the first passenger flights to land at Heathrow after the war, she was taken to meet her father-in-law, and he immediately began the urgent business of teaching her how to play cricket.
When my sister Laura and I were children, Plum was a distant, heroic figure who lived and breathed the mysterious essence of cricket: his prolific fluency as the game's historian also inspired awe (he had written almost 20 books about cricket and never needed to look up a single score).
Plum first learned to play cricket "in the marble gallery" of his father's house from "the bowling of a fl boy who rejoiced in the name of Killebree" (which means hummingbird), as he describes in the opening of his book, My Cricketing Life.

 The Plum Jelly Murder Case
Warner had always been interested in writing, but he had huge handicaps to overcome: he couldn't spell (he still can't); and grammar was then and is now a mystery to him.
Warner left City College, to 1950, he had a number of different inconsequential jobs, the longest at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach where he worked in the blueprint department for eight months, then he quit and loafed awhile.
Warner went back to City College for awhile, then he got a job on a freighter as a deckhand, and made two trips to the Hawaiian Islands, about 30 days round trip, hauling bulk sugar for CandH Sugar in Crocket California on the Sacramento River.

 Cricinfo - Plum Warner
For `Plum' Warner cherished and guided, with the utmost intensity and in a wide variety of ways, over the first half of the century the game they now love and enjoy.
`Plum' was an admirable player only a little removed from greatness, a Test batsman in his own right at the height of the Golden Age, the maker of 60 hundreds and, despite physical frailty and recurrent ill-health, all but 30,000 runs.
But if in terms of psychology `Plum' was naive, this not unlikeable failing has to be balanced against all the good he achieved for the benefit of cricket and cricketers over so long a span.

The book appears to take pains to get the basic facts correct (of course, I'd have to do more research to be able to tell you exactly how well it succeeds); the "fictionalization" comes in offering us these facts from the various points-of-view of the principal characters, supplying them with dialogue and motivation.
Then there's selector and tour manager Pelham "Plum" Warner: as "grand old man of cricket" and embodiment of all of the virtues the game has traditionally stood for, he soon begins to doubt his choice of single-minded Jardine as captain.
