Professor Sir Martin Rees, Professor of Cosmology and Astrophysics and Master of Trinity College, has been awarded the Crafoord Prize 2005 for ‘contributions towards understanding the large-scale structure of the Universe’.
The 2005 prize was jointly presented to Sir Martin, Princeton University’s James Gunn, Professor of Astronomy, and James Peebles, Professor of Science, (Emeritus).
In 1973, he became Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge (continuing in the latter post until 1991) and served for ten years as director of Cambridge's Institute of Astronomy.

Educated in mathematics and theoretical physics at Cambridge University, he returned there after wartime work on radar development and remained from 1945 to 1973, with many long-term visits to the California Institute of Technology and the Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories.
