After all, the name “Plumstead” means “place where the plum trees grow” and the site may well have been chosen by Roman Londoners for out-of-town orchards where the fruits that they had introduced to this country could be grown.
Long after the Romans departed Plumstead had a moment of glory when the body of Archbishop Alfege, murdered at Greenwich in 1012, was taken from St. Paul’s Cathedral in London for reburial in Canterbury Cathedral.

Plumstead Common has no less to do than other places and you have London on your doorstop..If you were living on a farm in Cumbria I can imagine you would have nothing to do...
I live just off Plumstead Common Road (St Margaret's Grove) around the corner from Barnfield Road and have not had any problems to date (nearly three years) but I would be lier If I said that the estate itself did not have it's problems.
We are a young (ish) couple with a toddler thinking of moving to Plumstead - we have visited and were knocked out by how lovely the area around the common is, and how affordable houses are.

 CWA: MTBE Contamination in Plumstead
In NOvember 2005 at a Plumstead Township (Bucks County) Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) meeting, residents concerned about a recently discovered Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) plume heard a presentation by DEP representatives on efforts to remediate the condition.
While one primary source of the contamination in Plumstead has been identified and remediation efforts taken, there is concern that there may be other sources as well.
DEP and Plumstead Township have a well testing process to monitor where the underground plume of MTBE is traveling and what water sources are in danger.

In the past Plumstead was a prosperous village with extensive well drained marshes for sheep grazing and good soil for fruit growing.
plumstead got its name because it use to have plum trees all over the place, this what im led to beleave anyway.
I was quite impressed with the P'stead common area, but think Plumstead high STreet looks rather depressing....would not want to feel trapped in a small pocket of normality within the deprived SE London.

I received a very nice phone call this afternoon from the rather delicious Bev M to say that she has hung up her dusters (metaphorically speaking of course) and bought a pub.
She is now the landlady of "The Prince Albert" in Old Mill Road, Plumstead (MAP), just 200 yards from Dave's Camelot Castle.
Given the pubs location on the edge of Plumstead Common, a trip to the "Albert" is somewhat disappointing.

The building which is sited on a slope down to the Thames is on the north side of Plumstead High Street adjacent to a small open space on the south side.

So, we wandered around the graveyard, which is pleasantly overcast by pine trees, and almost entirely surrounded by the grounds of Little Plumstead Hall.
This was for many years a secure hospital for people with learning disabilities, and part of it still houses the famous Broadland Clinic, but most of the site is now being sold off for housing.
So Little Plumstead will be come more suburban, and this little corner will have to hold its own.
