The Plymouth Cricket was a subcompact automobile sold by the Plymouth division of Chrysler Corporation in the US market from 1971 to 1973.
The Cricket's version of the Colt GT was called the Cricket Formula S. For the 1975 model year, the Plymouth Cricket was replaced by the Plymouth Colt.
The Plymouth Arrow was similarly sold as a Dodge Arrow.

To understand the Plymouth Cricket we once again look across the Pond to Chrysler UK, who at the time of the car's UK introduction in 1970 were still known as the Rootes Group with the Hillman, Singer, Sunbeam and Commer (commercial vehicle) brands.
Plymouth made a few changes to the Avenger to make it become the Cricket.

Another error in the brochure was the lack of rear quarter panes in the sedans on the driver's side - the vehicle used for inspiration, I suspect, was the prototype Plymouth Valiant that was a Signet hardtop on the driver's side and a V-200 sedan on the other.
In 1974, when Chrysler had quit importing the Hillman Avenger-based Plymouth Cricket from the UK [it was not brought in after 1972 but some were sold as 1973 models], Canadian Plymouth dealers got a badge-engineered Dodge Colt which was marketed under the Cricket name.
The first non-Japanese MoPar line made exclusively for the Canadian market was the '78 Plymouth Caravelle (actually first made in mid-1977), which was initially a Dodge Diplomat clone with modified grille and taillights; it lasted until its American counterpart died in 1989.

This is a 1974 Plymouth Cricket,it was purchased by my Wife on Oct/3/74 and has been with her since.The car currently is powered by a 1600 cc.
engine and a five speed manual trans as per Plymouth specs, it was originally a four speed car, however, this winter it is getting a MAJOR drive train overhaul in the form of a 4.3 Chevrolet V6, 4L80E four speed auto trans and a 8" Ford rear end.
I am now going with a 2.6 turbo set-up out of a Mitsubishi Starion, which is pretty much a bolt in and allows me to keep the stock suspension up front and also gives me a 5spd trans to boot.

The Plymouth Cricket in USA developed an odd reputation for a while, the centre section of the steering wheel is filled with soft foam, because it was considered likely that the driver would probably not be wearing the seatbelt.
It's doubtless a coincidence that an "alternative" to seatbelts, the air bag, was developed by Chrysler using the Cricket.

The Cricket is in excellent condition, with 42,000 miles on it (just slightly more then my ’59 Minx) and seems to run very well.
For those of you who don’t know, the Plymouth Cricket was the American version of the Hillman Avenger-the last new Hillman model ever made and the 1973 Cricket was the last Rootes or Chrysler UK car sold in the USA.
The Cricket had a new and entirely different transmission.

I do know that the Plymouth Cricket was sold in Canada simoltaneously with the Cricket in the US-I have a special Canadian sales brochure for the Cricket.
I also have several Canadian Sunbeam Arrow brochures (the Sunbeam Arrow in Canada was a slightly different model than the one sold in the US).
Cars: We’ve added a Hillamn Imp to the club since the last “Melodies” so now all of the major models of the Hillman are represented except for a Cricket.
