Burford, Neil - Department of Chemistry
The diverse chemistry established for phosphorus is often compared with that of carbon due to their diagonal relationship in the periodic table, but the extent of phosphorus chemistry is relatively limited.
The emerging importance of the pnictogen elements in the development of new thermoelectric materials, new electronic materials, new pharmaceuticals and novel polymeric materials requires a more extensive understanding of their fundamental chemistry.
We are investigating efficient and effective preparative or synthetic routes to new, fundamentally important molecules containing P, As, Sb or Bi, in which the pnictogen center exhibits an unusual local structure, is engaged in a new connectivity, provides materials with new, spectroscopic, physical or reactivity properties or has relevance in established bioactivity.

Ethylene oxide catalyst - Patent 5905053
A silver catalyst for ethylene oxidation to ethylene oxide is provided containing a promoter combination consisting of an alkali metal component, a sulfur component, a fluorine component, and a pnictogen component from the group phosphorus, bismuth and antimony; the catalyst is essentially free of rhenium and transition metal components.
The invention also requires a promoting amount of a pnictogen, an element from Group 15 of the Periodic Table of the Elements, selected from phosphorus, bismuth and antimony.
The use of pnictogens expressed as the element in the amount of 10-500 ppm by weight based on the weight of the catalyst, more preferably 10-300 ppm, is essential in accordance with the invention.

 Pnictogen Information Center - Pnictogen
The most important element of this group is Nitrogen (N), which in its diatomic form is the principle component of air.
Other members of the group include Phosphorus (P), Arsenic (As), Antimony (Sb), Bismuth (Bi), Polonium (Po) and ununpentium Pnictogen (UUp) (unconfirmed).
The collective name pnicogens (now also spelled pnictogens) is also sometimes used for elements of this group, with binary compounds being called pnictides: neither term is approved by IUPAC.

 [No title]
The structure of host networks and the size of the voids are primarily controlled by the nature and coordination demands of the elements composing the network.
In all mercury/pnictogen networks, linearly coordinated mercury atoms alternate with tetrahedrally coordinated pnictogen atoms.
Pnictogens, other than nitrogen, adopt tetrahedral coordination in any oxidation state, and at least two of them, -2 and -3, are displayed in supramolecular mercury pnictide-halides.

Effects of pnictogen and metal substitutions in La-filled skutterudites: electronic and phonon properties   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
A systematic investigation of the electronic properties and zone center phonons of La-filled skutterudites has been performed in order to characterize the effects of metal and pnictogen substitutions.
Using density functional theory we compute first principles band structure (BS) for phosphide, arsenide and antimonide compounds.
In addition to the f-resonance effect, we found the BS is very sensitive to the bonds' ionicity and that La-filling can introduce ``extra-charge'' that drastically modifies expectations based on BS of the unfilled material.

Pnicogen - Molecule of the Month
Even a simple search on ScienceDirect shows that there are about 25 pnictogen papers and ten on pnicogens, so it's about 2.5 to 1 for pnictogen.
These materials could eventually find use in solid-state refrigerators, too.
Perhaps the seeming ambiguity and confusion that surrounds the term pnicogen and the fact that IUPAC does not recommend its use at all, somehow hint at the strangeness of the pnictide compounds, but whether you say pnictogen and I say pnicogen, it will be a long time before anyone calls the whole thing off.

Conduction bands in the filled skutterudites
Band structure calculations have revealed the characteristics of the conduction bands.
The main conduction band consisting of p orbitals of pnictogen surrounding the rare-earth ions has a nesting property, and strongly hybridizes with one of 4f electrons.
One of the other conduction bands does not have mixing matrix elements with 4f electrons, resulting in the unique band structure in CeOs
