 Pocahontas article by 16-year-old DisneyTribesman
This long review/response to criticisms of Pocahontas was written for the rec.arts.disney newsgroup by 16-year-old Mark Wang, who did such a thorough job--especially of noting symbolism and humanitarian themes, character development--etc. that I'm putting it on this page as an inspiration to Indian youth as well as a chance for dialog.

The character shares the sense of wonder and vivid imagination of other Disney heroines, but there is an overall complexity to the character that they have rarely achieved before.
Prior to the release of POCAHONTAS (and even after it, to an extent) there has been a great deal of controversy surrounding the fact that this is Disney's first animated portrayal of an event from American history.
POCAHONTAS is by far Disney's most serious and dramatic animated feature to date.

 Pocahontas
Although Disney's "Pocahontas" only deals with the brief episode in her life where she meets and rescues Smith, what happened to the real Pocahontas during the rest of her short-but-eventful life is equally fascinating.
Menken is also currently re-teaming with his "Pocahontas" collaborator, Stephen Schwartz, in creating a rich tapestry of songs for Walt Disney Pictures' 34th full-length animated feature, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," due in theaters in 1996.
Disney's telling of the Pocahontas story takes a romantic and entertaining view of her legendary encounter with the adventurous English sea captain, John Smith, to provide a timeless, universal and uniquely satisfying motion picture experience.

This is evident through the statement that Pocahontas has been called a “Disney girl for the nineties.” She seems to be created to be more masculine in stature, both mentally and physically.
As Aidman states, the later Disney movies, and in particular Pocahontas, appear to be attempts to respond to growing cultural diversity.

Pocahontas: 10th Anniversary Edition DVD Review
Pocahontas appeared to be the next great big Disney movie.
A grand epic set in the year 1607, Pocahontas was an ambitious project for Disney.
Pocahontas (speaking voice by Irene Bedard, singing voice by Judy Kuhn) is depicted as a young woman very much at a crossroads in her life.

 Pocahontas (1995)
The historical truth of the story is that Pocahontas or Matoaka was only around 10-12 years old and Smith was between ten and forty years older than she, which at the very least makes the relationship between the two of them a pedophile one upon Smith’s part.
The legend of Pocahontas came about in the 1620s when John Smith told of how a native girl saved him from being clubbed to death and the tale went on to achieve the status of a legend.
She is cast and drawn in noble poses - the obvious desire to create a strong female character - and emerges with considerable strength.

Most of the time when Disney characters are willing to sacrifice something they don't actually end up sacrificing.
He's one of the few Disney characters who actually displays real sacrifice.
John Smith saved Thomas from drowning, took the blame for Kocoum's death, and saved Pocahontas' father from being shot (after he had tried to kill him!).

Pocahontas is known throughout the world, especially to Americans and Britishers, as an example of friendly relations between the races as well as an epitome of the Rousseauvian ‘ noble savage’.
Pocahontas was a nickname meaning ‘ naughty one’ or ‘spoiled child ’, her real name being Amonte (as she was known to her parents), or Matoaka, her clan name.
Her body is scarcely contained within a buckskin outfit that is not only split on both sides of its skirt, but is several inches shorter than the dresses of the other women in Disney’s unhistorical Indian tribe.

 'Pocahontas' (G)
Disney films traditionally give the dark forces their due, and "Pocahontas" is also drawn in the velvety hues of the forest primeval.
Pocahontas (the voice of Irene Bedard), a beautiful member of the Algonquin Nation who's immersed in the ways of nature (her best pals are a raccoon called Meeko and a hummingbird called Flit), sets eyes on John Smith (Mel Gibson), a good-looking British soldier, and follows him around.
Pocahontas was only 12 when she saved the life of Captain John Smith, whom one historian described as an olde crosspatch.

 Pocahontas Movie Review
Pocahontas herself is the most memorable character in Disney history.
It is about the Pocahontas in all of us, the restless spirit who longs to bridge the chasm between what is right, and what should be right (but it not), the Powhatan in us who clings to what is familiar, and the John Smith who would like to gain the new without losing the old.
Nakoma is also as traditional as her people, and so can never really understand Pocahontas.

Whoosh! Film Reviews: Pocahontas (Disney, 1995)
Furthermore, Disney's "Pocahontas" recycles the classic romantic scenario of the Indian maiden leaving her family and culture behind to be swept into the arms of a handsome white stranger.
Pocahontas, named Matoaka by her own people, was one of Powhatan's many children by one of his many wives.
More reliable sources show that at the age of seventeen, during a friendly visit to Jamestown, the "real" Pocahontas was kidnapped by the English and held as a hostage for over a year.
