Pocahontas (1995 movie) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
It is based loosely on the encounter between the colonists of Jamestown, Virginia with the native Powhatan tribe, and in particular presents a highly romanticized account of the meeting between Pocahontas and John Smith.
Executives perceived the character to lighten the tone of the film excessively, and the turkey was replaced with the characters Meeko the raccoon and Flit the hummingbird.
Upon release, however, Pocahontas was criticized by many for presenting stereotypical images of Native Americans, and by others for presenting a ludicrously distorted version of the historical events on which it was based.

The story of the Indian princess Pocahontas, whose love for the Englishman John Smith saves the settler's life when he is taken prisoner by her tribe for the murder of a warrior.
Little is known about the actual Pocahontas, except that she had a two-year relationship with Smith, who landed in Jamestown in 1607 with 103 colonists.
Pocahontas married an Indian chief after Smith returned to England, though she would later meet and marry John Rolfe, another Englishman, and die in London of smallpox as she was trying to raise funds for the colonists.

Also, if the movie created characters who resembled their historical forebears in age and appearance, we'd have a pretty sick story, since a grown man would be smitten by a very underaged girl; they'd have to call it Lolitahontas.
