		At its mouth, the river is essentially an arm of Chesapeake Bay, whereas the upper river flows through a series of relatively inaccessible wetlands, called the Pocomoke River Swamp, populated by loblolly pine and baldcypress.
		The river is the easternmost river that flows into Chesapeake Bay and is considered to be one of the deepest rivers for its width in North America.
		In 1635 the mouth of the river was the scene of the first recorded battle in North America between Englishmen.

		The Pocomoke River â” the scene of fish kills two years ago â” has levels of dissolved metals and steroids that in some cases are âorders of magnitudeâ higher than those typically seen in Chesapeake tributaries, according to a new study by investigators at the U.S. Geological Survey and George Mason University.
		Not all of the steroid compounds in the river have been identified, but several are in a class of compounds called estradiols, which have the potential to be âhormone disruptersâ â” substances that mimic some hormones in animals, affecting growth and reproduction.
		But the steroids in the river could be of more concern, Foster said, because they are in the water column where they are directly available to aquatic life, and because they are found at relatively high concentrations.

		Consequently, she is concerned for the health of fishermen and people who eat diseased fish and has campaigned against the urban and agricultural developments that are nourishing the river waters of North Carolina and allowing P. piscicida and its deadly relatives to flourish.
		Pocomoke River fishermen reported finding lesions (sores) on many of the fish they caught in the river, first in October 1986, and again this April.

		The sun was shining bright and although the narrow river was relatively protected from the high wind, there were a few portions where we did paddle into the wind.

		Arriving back at the Pocomoke River Canoe Company the outfitter staff assisted our flotilla onto the floating dock, a magnanimous gesture they would repeat as various Duckhead trips concluded at their establishment throughout the weekend.
