Poecilia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Poecilia Bloch and Schneider, 1801, is a genus of freshwater fish in family Poeciliidae of order Cyprinodontiformes.
Live-bearers, the Poecilia species are collectively known as mollies, with the exception of the famous guppy (P.
The generic name Poecilia derives from the Greek ποικίλος (variegated), in reference to the fishes' coloration.

The sailfin molly was originally described in 1821 as Mollienesia latipinna by the naturalist Charles Alexandre Lesueur, oft noted as one of a number of persons instrumental in the founding of a well known experimental settlement at New Harmony, Indiana during the 1820's.
In a landmark work on poeciliid fishes, Donn Rosen and Reeve Bailey (1959) noted the priority of Poecilia Bloch and Schneider 1801 with regards to Mollienesia Lesueur 1821, thereby relegating Mollienesia to the synonymy of Poecilia.
Consequently, the proper binomial for the sailfin molly is Poecilia latipinna (Lesueur, 1821).

This fish is very similar to the Mexican Sailfin Molly, Poecilia velifera.
The major difference lies in this fishes ability to cope with a wider range of water conditions and the size of the females.
This fish comes in many color and body morphs, although the non-balloon, non-lyretail, non-ornamental colored fish seem to be much hardier.

Using this information, it was discovered that the D-loop of the unknown fish shares 91% of its base pairs with Poecilia latipinna, a species of fish that is found throughout the tropics, as well as parts of the United States (Williams et al., 1998).
This information suggests that the identity of the unknown fish is in fact, Poecilia latipinna, and that a new species has not evolved in the lake.
By using the Blast search, it was discovered that the unknown fish shares 91% of its base pairs the species Poecilia latipinna, commonly referred to as mollies, and is also very similar to Poecilia velifera.

Lipid dynamics during reproduction in two livebearing fishes, Gambusia holbrooki and Poecilia latipinna
We conducted a laboratory experimenton the eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki) and the sailfin molly (Poecilia latipinna) to document changes in lipid content in both the ovary and soma during development of a brood.
In females of both species, ovarian lipid content was highest early in embryogeny and then declined; adult somatic lipids increased (were replenished) during embryonic development in mosquitofish, but declined in mollies.
Finally, growth rate was positively correlated with somatic lipid content in both species, indicating among-individual differences in metabolic efficiency or feeding efficiency rather than a trade-off between growth and energy storage.

The basis for this seemingly age-old wisdom comes from various fishkeepers, as well as the brackish or marine conditions that Poecilia lattipina (the ancestor of all cultivated Mollys), often frequents.
Pet shop and introduced mollies are usually “aquarium strains” which are hybrids from Poecilia latipinna, P. velifera, and species from the “sphenops” complex.
Florida’s race of P. latipinna is the only Molly species that commonly inhabits "salt-water" and one of the few (along with a race of P. velifera) to inhabit "brackish" habitats.
