Live-bearing aquarium fish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Instead, the species of interest to aquarists are almost always members of the family Poecilidae, most commonly guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails.
Most of the Poecilidae are ovoviviparous, that is, while the eggs are retained inside the body of the female for protection, the eggs are essentially independent of the mother and she does not provide them with any nutrients.
In contrast, fish such as splitfins and halfbeaks are viviparous, with the eggs being receive food from the maternal blood supply through structures analagous to the placenta of placental mammals.

Three Unusual Livebearers, by Howard Norfolk
The three families of livebearing toothcarps all come from Central and South America: Poecilidae (guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails), Anablepidae, and Goodeidae.
Goodeids all come from Mexico, from a variety of niche habitats in the highland catchment area of the Rio Lema in Western Mexico, and Ameca splendens comes from the Rio Ameca basin (hence the name).
They breed readily when kept in a shoal, and once a few youngsters are present, the newcomers are left alone.

Reference - Scientific Name Change Of The Guppy Or Millions Fish
During REGAN's revision of the Genus Poecilidae in 1913 both stocks from the Berlin and London Museums were recognised to be the same species and renamed Lebistes reticulatus (acknowledging PETERS description as the first valid one).
Again Poecilidae is under review and a return to the name Lebistes reticulatus looks imminent for the Guppy.
But who knows, maybe in a quirky twist of fate some scientist somewhere may acknowledge the contribution originally made by GOLLMER and rename the species Poecilia gollmer.

Because of their scarcity, native helminths are not likely to present disease threats to Hawaiian stream fishes.
Exotic helminths have invaded Hawaiian streams as parasites of alien fishes, principally livebearers (Poecilidae), introduced for mosquito control and as aquarium escapees.
These broadly specific parasites, including a roundworm Camallanus cotti, a tapeworm Bothriocephalus acheilognathi and a leech Myzobdella lugubris, have transferred from exotic to native fish hosts and now are the most widespread of all stream fish parasites.

Alpha males show much more intense colour and the whole of the caudal will be red.
Males are easily distinguished by the usual Poecilidae gonopodium.
For many years this species was thought to be a form of P. shenops, and the famous photo in Innes book was thought to be retouched as specimens showing this colouration.

THE LIVEBEARIUM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
This is the first of what I hope will be many articles on livebearers.
I hope to impart information on species in the classic livebearer families, Poecilidae, Anablepidae, and Goodidae, as well as some of the lesser-known fishes such as Hemiramphidae (Halfbeaks), and Embiotocidae (Surf Perches).
So first lets start with some basic facts about livebearing fish.

 Breeding in the Wild
The livebearers give birth to formed fishes as fertilization takes place inside the bodies of the parents as their ancestors did.
Most of the time this happens inside the females’ bodies (Poecilidae and Carcharinidae), but in some species (Sygnathidae) as Hippocampus, the fertilization and incubation takes place inside the male specimens’ bodies.
But let us take a look at the breeding events taking place among what we call egg layers.

There are some fish however that, in this regard, are exceptional.
The family Poecilidae includes the guppy, which found in nearly all shops selling aquarium fish (Other fish in this family, which are sold in shops, include the molly and the platy).
Next time you pass one of these shops, go in and take a look.

Freshwater pipefish are rarely bred in captivity, but since seahorses are spawned frequently, they would certainly make a suitable fish for the advanced hobbyist.
Although the ability to produce live young (rather than eggs) is found in many groups of fishes, the family Poecilidae is so specialised for this mode of reproduction that the group is usually referred to simply as the 'livebearers'.
Females are generally larger than the males, and often quite drab in colouration.

Journal of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences: Comparison of Metabolic Rates of Guppy, Poecilia reticulata (Poecilidae), and Black Molly, Poecilia latipinna (Poecilidae), at Different Temperatures.(Statistical Data Included)@ HighBeam Research
This research was designed to compare the metabolic rates (mRs) of guppy, Poecilia reticulata (Poecilidae) and fl molly, Poecilia latipinna (Poecilidae) at 23-25[degrees]C and at 15[degrees]C, using the indirect respirometry.
Most aquaria kept at homes are maintained in the 23-25[degrees]C temperature range.
