Poeciliidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Poeciliidae is a family of fresh-water fishes which are live-bearing aquarium fish (they give birth to live young).
Rather than describing the whole family Poeciliidae as "ovo-viviparous", it is probably more accurate to say that the family consists of species which are all live-bearers, but that these vary in their reproductive life history: closely allied species within the same clade may show variable maternal provisioning.
Members of the genus Poeciliopsis, for example, show variable reproductive life history adaptations.

 ***LivingFish.co.uk/What is a livebearer***
In Goodeidae species they still have a modified anal fin but this is very different to the Poeciliidae species, the male has a notch towards the front of the anal fin which is used it aid in the breeding procures and is called the "spermatopodium".
The Poeciliidae is the largest family, these fish are probably the easiest to sex as the males have an highly modified anal fin.
The males in the family are very small compared to the females, usually not even half the size of the female, but the fry are very large when born compared to most other livebeares.

Intercohort cannibalism and parturition-associated behaviour of captive-bred swordtail, Xiphophorus helleri (Pisces: Poeciliidae)
Adult fish that belong to the family Poeciliidae cannibalise juveniles, both in the wild and under captive conditions, but this behaviour has only been partly investigated in the Poeciliidae in some of the commercially valuable species.
The objective of the research is to develop an understanding of intercohort cannibalism and parturition-associated behaviour in captive-bred swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri), with applications to industry and future research of other poeciliids.

Abstract: Two populations of eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki; Poeciliidae) in South Carolina, one in an ambient temperature pond and the other in a pond heated to near-lethal temperatures by nuclear reactor effluents for 60-90 mosquitofish generations, offered an excellent opportunity to observe selection for increased thermal tolerance.
First, we determined the critical thermal maximum of each population and, as predicted, found the thermal population to have a higher one.

 Livebearers - Poeciliidae
The Poeciliidae or Livebearing tooth-carp family originated from North, Central, and SouthAmerica, but now can be found worldwide, as they have been introduced for mosquito control. The fish of the Poeciliidae Family arethe best-known of all aquarium fish due to their relative ease of keep, and the many colorful, cultivated varietiesavailable.
Live-bearers are highly developed on an evolutionary scale, and their adaption gives theirlive young an advantage over egg-laying species. The genera of Poeciliidae that are most commonly kept in aquaria areBelonesox, Limia, Poecilia, and Xiphophorus.
SIZE:Livebearing toothcarps are generally small to medium size, from 1.5-5" (4-13 cm) inlength. An exception is the Pike Livebearer which can reach 9" (23 cm)
