  What is this "song-poem"?
Song-poem entrepreneurs (called "song sharks") manipulate these facets of human nature to deceive naïve individuals into subsidizing a quest to have their poem become the lyric of a smash hit record.
The completed song is then sent to an airless studio, where musicians, vocalists and an engineer gather to record it and many others like it as fast as is humanly possible, often on a quota basis that can gobble up 12 or more songs per hour.
Because most song-poem companies provide a checklist of pop music styles from which the customer may select a favorite or most suitable mode for their song to be set in, the studio personnel assigned to make the record does so according to a readymade template that roughly resembles that style.

Prufrock’s Love Song: A Funny Poem
About "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," Garrison Keillor, who habitually bemoans the fact that poetry is not always a barrel of laughs, has asserted, “a small, dark mopefest of a poem in which old Pru worries about whether to eat a peach or roll up his trousers?
Keillor and his ilk, for whom old Pru killed off poetry, need simply to reread the poem with the attitude that the poem is not serious; it is making fun of certain modernist angst-ridden stances that were making poetry and the arts unintelligible and worthless.
The poem itself is mishmash of form, consisting of 131 lines separated into free-verse paragraphs, yet it has rime throughout, delivered in uneven rhythmns.

WWP - LG encoding guide: Speeches and poems
Although a play is a different thing from a poem, it may still be written wholly or partly in what we call "dramatic verse".
A poem is an independent ontological unit, whereas a speech in a play--even if written in rhyming couplets--is just a constituent unit of a much larger thing: the play is the independent ontological unit.
However, just as you can have a poem or song inside a novel, so you can have a poem or song inside a play--and this has nothing to do with whether any of the speeches are in verse or not.

The Black National Anthem" began as a poem written by James Weldon Johnson around the turn of the 20th century.
By 1900, the brothers lived in New York, where they were able to work on Broadway musicals including "Humpty Dumpty" and "The Sleeping Beauty." It was during this time that they created "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," which was performed by a choir of children in honor of President Lincoln's birthday.
