In this area, eastern Africa includes such countries as Ethiopia, Somalia, and Uganda.Among the nations of Central and West Africa are Angola, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, formerly Zaire).
Africa also encompasses many islands, the largest of which is Madagascar, located off the southeastern coast of the continent.
Africa is rich in natural resources, and part of its economic base is the export of this wealth.

 Black Literature
This poem is the first known to be written by a fl person in the United States and was not published until approximately 100 years later.
Phillis Wheatley writes "A Poem by Phillis, A Negro Girl, on the Death of Reverend George Whitefield," her first work, although the poem was not published until 1770.
The poem is a parody of the patriotic hymn, "America the Beautiful," and is an early example of the irony characteristic of fl American literature.

It spoke of Black writers and poets, "who would surrender racial pride in the name of a false integration," where a talented Black writer would prefer to be considered a poet, not a Black poet, which to Hughes meant he subconsciously wanted to write like a white poet.
He wrote sixteen books of poems, two novels, three collections of short stories, four volumes of "editorial" and "documentary" fiction, twenty plays, children's poetry, musicals and operas, three autobiographies, a dozen radio and television scripts and dozens of magazine articles.

 Langston Hughes: The Black Bard at 100
He edited numerous noteworthy collections of Black writing, notably The Poetry of the Negro 1746-1949, with his friend Arna Bontemps, and Poems from Black Africa, Ethiopia and Other Countries.
It included one of the poems for which he is best known, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers", first published in the Black periodical Crisis in 1921.
This exhibition in honor of Langston Hughes was mounted in the John Hay Library of Brown University in February 2002.
