Érudit | RON n29-30 2003 : Mandell : Introduction: The Poetess Tradition1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Poetess poetry is self-avowedly middle-brow: it contrasts with the higher literature that the poetess quotes, lauds, and reads as one of the very literary occasions for writing her own poem.
The poetess is a sort of Martha Stewart, infuriating to the extent that she so happily celebrates her oppression, admirable to the extent that she capitalizes on it.
Insofar as the poetess is not represented in her poems as this sovereign self, her poetry is indeed what Glissant calls a “nonprojectile imaginary construct” (35), that is, an artistic endeavor that does not have imperialist and colonizing designs.

A poetess, in the simplest sense, is a (An adult female person (as opposed to a man)) woman (A writer of poems (the term is usually reserved for writers of good poetry)) poet.
The word "poetess" is often used in a mildly (Click link for more info and facts about pejorative) pejorative and dismissive sense; like all the best pejoratives, it keeps open the option to deny that the person who used the word meant anything of the kind.
Referring to a woman who writes poetry as a poetess risks calling forth this stereotype.

An elegy by French poetess Marceline Desbordes-Valmore manipulates Davidson’s image as a means of insisting on the abstemiousness (to the point of death) of the poetess figure despite her hyperproductivity, and then ultimately insists upon the interchangeability and solidarity of women poets.
On the one hand, the young poetess is figured as exceptional and thus not imitable; on the other hand, critics and poets view her case as transmissible, and even dangerously contagious.
According to Southey’s narrative, the young poetess strictly controls her consumption of food and poetry writing, a resistance that challenges her ties to mother and father as well as her identity within the patriarchal order and developing consumer society.

The Poetess in America by Annie Finch (6) | Able Muse - Critical Issue, Winter 2002
Independently of romanticism and modernism, the poetesses developed and explored their own poetic traditions and techniques to embody their view of a shared, accessible world, open to tradition and convention, and an often diffused, uncentered self that did not have a privileged subjectivity.
For the poetesses, a fluid self is not linked to outer chaos; in fact, self-diffusion may only be possible insofar as the outer world is perceived as a stable place linked by natural cycles and the ties of community.
The Sentimentist women poets have been relegated to silence in our century because their poetry threatens the most basic tenets of Romanticism.   Their poems call into question the importance and solidity of the individual self; the possibility of objectifying nature; and the fundamental alienation of self from the world.

 The Transatlantic Poetess
.’ She seems to be typical of the half-crazed human poetess, in usual sublime dishabille,” North’s Specimens of the British Critics, Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine 58 (1845): 244.
We can make the kinds of selfhood imagined by poetess poetry most visible by distinguishing them from those kinds of persons that are hailed into being by the high, canonical literature of the British Empire and of American Revolt.
You will then present your poetess to the class, situating her writings within popular and canonical literary tradition.

 UPNE | The Romantic Poetess
Elegiac Muses is the first general introduction to the poetry, culture, and politics of the romantic poetess in Europe.
Following in the footsteps of Germaine de Staël (and her heroine Corinne, 1807), these women wrote to foster sympathy and facilitate the development of a liberal, internationalist culture, identifying with writers from other countries, imagining their “civilizing mission” as collective and universal.
Among the book’s noteworthy achievements is its establishment of the romantic poetess as an important figure in the emergence of the modern liberal state.
