		Your April editorial on the current status of poetry in the US recalls in some ways Delmore Schwartz's address, "The Present State of Poetry," delivered in January 1958 and published later that year by the Library of Congress.
		It's difficult to convince our smaller branches to buy poetry collections for their patrons, as poetry often doesn't get much use in many neighborhoods, and with shrinking budgets each purchase is carefully considered for circulation value to the agency.
		Whether or not it was to his own taste, he was able to appreciate the value of such a collection for the common reader and shared his thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of the selections therein.

		Having been weaned as an English major on the Norton Anthology of English Literature, vol.'s 1 and 2, (Abrams), I expected this anthology to lead me through modern poetry with the same sure hand as the previous Norton anthologies had.
		I suspect this may be the result of the aseptic minimalism of modernism, which often strikes me as a transmuted death wish, a wish to disappear.
