Pogo stick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A pogo stick is a device, usually considered a children's toy, used for hopping up and down.
The pogo stick can be steered, with some difficulty, by shifting one's weight; and becomes an interesting form of locomotion.
A hi-tech variant of the pogo stick, powered by an adjustable rubber-like (i.e., elastomeric) spring system, has recently been marketed under the name Flybar.

St. James Encyclopedia of Pop Culture: Pogo
In 1942 Kelly invented Pogo as a backup feature for Animal Comics, a magazine wherein the designated star was supposed to be the venerable rabbit gentleman Uncle Wiggily.
A very scruffy and too-realistic-looking possum at the start, Pogo soon improved in appearance and eventually came to be the leading character in the feature.
Aware that Kelly's views on such topics as Senator McCarthy, the Ku Klux Klan, and the John Birch Society did not sit especially well with some of their subscribing editors, his syndicate suggested that he prepare a few alternative strips to run in place of an offensive one.
